Hanoi Everyday – Hanoi, Vietnam

Jump to the full entry & travel map Hanoi, Vietnam Yesterday, we had a great last day in Bangkok.  We toured the Grand Palace and some amazing Buddhist temples (Wats) in the city.  We have some great photos and we’ll upload later. One question that came up: in Wat Pho, which came first, the giant reclining Buddha or the temple? Would love an answer if anyone knows. We still haven’t stopped sweating since the first day, but are getting used to it.  We grabbed a swim to cool off at our hotel before departing for Hanoi. We arrived last night in Hanoi and were picked up by our hotel’s car service.  We quickly got a glimpse of road travel in Hanoi on the 30-minute journey into the city.  There are mopeds all over the roads with as many as 5 people on any given one. Imagine your most intense game of Frogger, make it live, and add in people honking their horns at you

Playa Del Rey and Corona – Pasadena, California, United States

Jump to the full entry & travel map Pasadena, California, United States Better late than never – here’s our updated on last Wednesday and Thursday evenings.  On Wednesday we headed to Playa Del Rey after the third session of the day, since none of the topics for the fourth session seemed interesting.  Playa Del Rey is close to LAX, and is where I spent the Sunday afternoon in March when I flew to Los Angles to visit the University of Southern California during the graduate school decision process.  Needless to say, Playa Del Rey was much more crowded this time!  JT and I really enjoyed watching the 747s and Southwest Airlines planes (737s) take off over the beach.  And, of course, it was great to be back on the beach with sand beneath my toes and hearing the sound of the ocean.  Luckily, this will become rather common for the next couple weeks!  One interesting note concerning Playa Del Rey – the area the planes fly over between the airport and the beach once contained houses, but these houses were all torn down at some point, leaving only the roads inside a ghostly fenced in area.  It is certainly a site to see.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Mandalay, Myanmar Originally called ‘Maymyo Botanical Garden Reserve’, Kandawgyi Botanical Garden at Pyin Oo Lwin was notified on 8 September 1924 as having an area of 437 acres (177 ha) including a 70 acres (28.3 ha) lake. Kandawgyi is a Myanmar word for big pond. In the year 1917, when the site was prepared for the botanical garden, the Kew Botanic Garden in England (established 1759) was contacted for advice and support.

IJCAI Conference – Pasadena, California, United States

Jump to the full entry & travel map Pasadena, California, United States Hi everyone – it’s Katie, and I’m writing with my conference update. The conference began in Pasadena, CA last Sunday with the STRUCK (Learning Structural Knowledge from Observations) workshop.  My research group from the Cognitive Computing Lab at Georgia Tech and I wrote a paper that got accepted to this workshop, so we got the opportunity to present our work to a bunch of our colleagues.  Here’s a link to the paper ( http://www.cs.umd.edu/~ukuter/struck09/final-papers/5.pdf ) and here’s a link to the workshop website ( http://www.cs.umd.edu/~ukuter/struck09/ ).  The workshop was an extremely valuable experience because (1) everyone at the workshop was working on somewhat similar research problems and domains as what I worked on for the past year and (2) the smaller group (about 25 people) allowed me to meet and talk with some students and professors whom I otherwise wouldn’t have connected with in a less intimate setting

This blog is specially for Aine – Hong Kong, China

Jump to the full entry & travel map Hong Kong, China Aine, the hotel Ibis is terrific.  The rooms are very small but sufficient and it is Hong Kong.  It was much cheaper than the fancier hotel. The cheaper alternatives, the mansions, are deadly fire traps.  there are many thousands of people crammed into quite ancient buildings.  People live and work here.  there are many restaurants with open fires and of course lots of people smoke.  The stairs are narrow and winding

No room at almost any inn – Lander, Wyoming, United States

Jump to the full entry & travel map Lander, Wyoming, United States We stopped at one of the Wind River Indian casinos and saw a series of dances by the Arapaho tribe to help people understand who they are.  We ended up dancing in a circle with the Arapaho at the end of the presentation. The only pictures we took were of the casino. We ended up staying in Lander, WY where there was a WY Harley Davidson motorcycle meet this weekend.  Mostly all of the motel rooms were booked

Fish heads or fish lips – Hong Kong, China

Jump to the full entry & travel map Hong Kong, China Hong Kong was easy and enjoyable. We took a city bus from the airport to our hotel. It was a double decker.  With only a little trepidation we left our baggage down stairs and watched the magic jewel of the city of Hong Kong pass by.   Our first night we eat fish heads.  Delicious! Don’t think about something icky think about more about Pringles, with soft sweet flesh and a tasty tomato sauce.  Don’t think about the fish eye! Well yes! You can think about the fish eye there was only one and Carl scored it

The Calm before the storm. – Piedmont, California, United States

Jump to the full entry & travel map Piedmont, California, United States So after the long and laborious task of packing, moving and unpacking my possessions, I have finally relocated my bed, and therefore my life, to Piedmont for the next three and a half days.  During this period of time I will undoubtedly (*snicker*) be making all necessary arrangements for my upcoming trip to Europe with Ben (read: totally awesome) which is, of course, the entire reason this blog exists in the first place.  Now I must admit that this is my first time really blogging…like ever , so do excuse any blogging faux pas that I might commit.  Unfortunately by virtue of me having not even LEFT the country yet, I actually have very little toactually blog about , however I am feeling particularly narcissistic at the moment so, to occupy my time and yours, I’ll give you a brief tour of my new and improved room at home. Some of you who have visited my room in Piedmont before are in for a treat, and those who haven’t…well…you’ll get to see where the Ross-man grew up.  To start off, we should address the most prominent and eye popping feature of the room: the Bed.  Before I moved back here, my room housed a modest and simple twin bed.  A simple bed for a simple man.  However, college has changed me and the sheer girth of academic knowledge I absorbed there grew my ego to an unprecedented size.  My ego is, in fact, so vast in size that I now completely and utterly require a bed that is at least twice the size of my old one.  Pictured on the left is that bed.  Now many of you may notice the very slight floral theme my bed has adopted since the move from Chico, however I would like to ensure everyone that this change is wholly ephemeral in nature and that the status quo should, hopefully, be restored by the end of the day.  I must admit, however, the light pink, blue and yellow flowers had a very calming effect on my sleep last night, however I completely blame them for causing the turtles wielding knives in my reaccuring nightmares to become flaming turtles with knives. Next we have the foot of my bed which now houses the various posters, wires, cables and other random knick-knacks in my room that never really found a place and who, as a result, have settled into a rather nomadic routine, and I fully expect the TV and the bulliten board to be gone within the next few days, undoutebly leaving my room for find a much more lush and fertile oasis (read: the attic).
