A few days ago I witnessed an excessively sad event. A huge group of merchants was thrown out (by the police) of a hall in the center of Warsaw (which they had been renting for several years), and the events turned violent and nasty, with throwing of stones and fights and tear gas and general havoc. Although it did look like some sort of incomprehensible flash mob or other performative party, one could hardly squeeze it into the “new art” category, were it not for one significant detail: the commercial hall is to be substituted by the Museum of Modern Art .

Jump to the full entry & travel map Tallinn, Estonia Next up was Tallinn and the 16 EUR hostel on Rosena 9 (actually €10 per night – Bargain!). The hostel was (in)conveniently co-located with a stripclub and discotech – which we later discovered operates until 6:00am in the morning! WhiIe it’s safe to say that we were based in one of the less salubrious parts of town, we found our location handy to the tourist centre in the old-town. The old town is home to the majority of places of interest including the old city wall, town hall square (host of a medieval market at the time of our visit), Cathedral of Mary the Virgin and, unfortunately, blighted only by the presence of a McDonalds restaurant (can you pick the golden arches?).

It was a particularly stressful time in the lead up to our departure with packing boxes, moving out of the flat and more than one temper tantrum… mostly John 
, but first up on our whistle stop tour of Eastern Europe was Helsinki… Chloe’s friend, Heikki, met us at the airport and took us on a tiki-tour of Helsinki en route to our hostel, the Academica Summer Hostel on Hietaniemenkatu (some would say he was a little lost, but we prefer to say that we saw the sights). It was great to be met by a local and to catch up with an old travelling buddy (thanks Heikki!). Thanks also to Heikki and Anna for cooking us a great meal, the evening tour and for introducing us to “megapussi” and “fanny custard”!!! Haha!! Helsinki hosted the 1952 Summer Olympics and the various stadia are still in use throughout the city. We took a morning run around the Gulf of Finland, the main stadium and surrounds – all a little less impressive than we had expected. On the way home, we found a bar called the KY Club – which we found just as amusing as other Finnish words.

At the bus station you fill in immigration cards when you get on the bus you give your passport and card to the bus guide so he can check everything before we get to the border. The journey was ok, closed the curtain over, put the seat back and slept!Like the bus from Siem Reap to PP a little packed lunch was provided – not very good one but hey ho… Just before the border crossing the coach stopped, we got cash out of the ATM, bought fruit and water, had a little walk round and then got back on the bus to go ooo the 100 yards to the crossing

Jump to the full entry & travel map Salta, Argentina Dreaming as i had of galloping across the vast beautiful argentinian plains, imagine my disappointment as i mounted my lovely white horsey, welcome and headed down on a slow walk with the group along this wee path that could have been anywhere in the world, ever. We got on to a bigger stretch where welcome and i welcomed the opportunity for a wee canter. It lasted not long as i got bollocked by the argentinian cowboy (or gaucho) and was quite literally pulled into line, he looked a little like yer man Che, so was forgiven quite rapidly. I had been a bit premature anyway as we all got a wee gallop in around the next corner, which was really quite funny on some different levels least not, I suddenly felt rather Princess Anne in my competency. There were a few more of these stints before the gaucho´s put on a display for us which mostly involved the tucan guys volunteering to run the gauntlet and not get caught. Let´s just say we were examining Seamus´s rope burns on his hip last night, 3 weeks after the fact.
