Ok – drove through a little town on my back way home from work and decided to stop at the little Antique Store “Nolensville Feed Mill” and take some pictures. Of course, being a new photographer, I still don’t know the eqttiqute so I thought it best to go inside and ask the owner if I could take some photos of his stuff because I was practicing and it looked interesting. He promptly and kindly thanked me for asking first. He said that in the past he’s had people stop and take photos without asking. He’s ok with it but with liability issues he would rather someone ask first. I don’t blame him. He was really nice to me and if you’re ever in the Nolensville area, please stop in and say hi. I took a lot of pictures and finally decided on the one below. Of course as always I will post some of the other ones I took on my website http://www.janscapturedmemories.com . You can click on the folder called “Old Stuff in Nolensville.” This one I simply call “Old Stuff in Nolensville.” Too tired to be creative with the name.

I ran into Dred Scot t in New York, which is how I learned that he’d done a work for Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program . Dred Scott and Mural Arts? Scott describes himself as making revolutionary art to propel history forward. 'Danny,' detail from Dred Scott's installation across from Juvenile Court His work has been discussed in books with titles such as Arresting Images: Impolitic Art and Uncivil Actions and Transgressions: The Offences of Art , which says something about its reception. Did Mural Arts really invite him to Philadelphia to create something other than a mural? Well, you wouldn’t know it from their website, but the piece is well-documented on Scott’s website , with documentation of the process and film interviews with the participants.

Mesh details are showing up in an unexpected place – shoes for Fall & Winter! I’ve already written about some of Christian Louboutin ’s new mesh-detail shoes – but he’s not the only one getting into the sheer fun. Dior , and Jimmy Choo both have mesh shoes for Fall 2009 . Of course, if you’re going to rock the mesh look, there is a time and a place for it… In my neck of the woods, winter involves some serious snow and cold – which is just not so practical for high heeled mesh shoes! Now if winter just means you don’t need to have the air conditioner on all the time – go ahead and have fun! The Dior “ Corset ” bootie is made using kid leather with a lace upper, and is available in both brown and black. The Jimmy Choo mesh bootie is made from a fishnet lace mesh, calfskin trim and embellished with silver studs

Export of handicraft items of East Java slipped down to US$ 37.67 million from $39.2 million on account of global financial crisis, revealed an official. This financial situation also has taken its toll on a few of the countries, to which East Java exports its handicrafts, said an officer from East Java’s trade and Industry Office. As a preventive measure, the agency is trying to promote handicraft products from all regions of East Java through routine exhibitions, expecting further plunge in exports.

I had the pleasure of checking out the Buriki: Japanese Tin Toys from the Golden Age of American Automobile exhibit at the Japan Society this past weekend. The exhibit was a celebration of Japan’s achievements in tin toy design in the first two decades following World War II. The detail and construction of these is amazing.

It’s rare, but much more interesting, to find serious museums who are willing to take a focused look at art of particularly local interest rather than seeing yet again the same handful of artists who are fashionable at the moment throughout international art circles. I saw fascinating exhibits in July at The Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane and Project Arts Centre of two generations of artists whose themes are Irish national identity (not individual identity, as was of interest to Americans since the 1980s) during periods of change. Timothy Hawkesworth The Sower at Night 1986 While much of the work would stand up to international viewing it all concerns specifically Irish questions that would require footnotes elsewhere.
Filed under: Celebrities with Style , Hair Cut and Style It may not be trendy, but long, wavy hair is still the style of choice for stars like Demi Moore, Eva Longoria and Fergie (left to right). Photos: Getty Images Long hair just doesn’t get the headlines it used to. Gwyneth Paltrow , Victoria Beckham , Katie Holmes , Agyness Deyn and Rihanna ‘s short, sharp haircuts each got so much press and fashion props, that recently, those with long, painstakingly grown hair (myself included) have had good reason to wonder if our looks were looking a little too early Nineties

The cool and sexy look of rockabilly hairstyles started way back in the 1930′s, 40′s and 50′s from among the working classes. It was a way of expressing their desire to stand out and be noticed, a desire to reflect their personality and the love of things like music and cars of the era (now vintage cars) as well as a particularly bold way of dressing. The overall look was certainly sexy, though there was more elegance and class that was associated with the rock and roll movement of that time.

It’s not often that I find myself heading for lectures sponsored by applied mathematicians, but last Spring I went to the Math department at the University of Pennsylvania to hear David Stork talk about the usefulness of computer modeling for art historians. computer study of Velazquez’s Las Meninas And I wasn’t the lone art historian. I found myself sitting beside David Stone of the University of Delaware and behind us was Chris Poggi, University of Pennsylvania, with a student of hers. Stork, the chief scientist at Ricoh Innovations and Consulting Professor of Statistics at Stanford University was always interested in art and has studied art history. He’s also pioneered the field of computer imaging of art , the talk’s subject. What’s interesting about Stork’s work is that it doesn’t begin with a thesis. Rather he’s developed a range of tools which he can bring to pre-existing art historical questions: exactly what is happening in Las Meninas ? How accurately did Vermeer reproduce the scenes and/or figures that he represented? And most sensationally, is David Hockney correct in his theory that Renaissance painters used optical devices to create such highly realistic looking paintings?
