The mystery of the Venetian gentleman, part three

Continued from here and here. When we left off yesterday , National Gallery of Art curator David Alan Brown was expressing skepticism that x-ray evidence and only x-ray evidence could demonstrate that Giorgione (or Titian) painted the NGA’s Portrait of a Venetian Gentleman. Brown pulled two x-rays out of a manila folder, showed them to me and told me that x-ray-pioneering art historian Alan Burroughs had said that the underpaint as revealed on these x-rays identified Giorgione as the author of the painting.

Britney Spears Wears a Bikini to Deliver David Letterman’s Top Ten List

Filed under: Style in the News Britney Spears flaunted her acting chops and newly fit figure on last night’s ” Late Show with David Letterman ” via a pre-recorded video (above). Clad only in a little black bikini with silver trim with a giant red flower tucked behind her ear, the pop princess delivered Letterman’s “Top Ten Ways the Country Would be Different if Britney Spears were President” with cheeky aplomb. The svelte blonde star promised that as the country’s president she would “only invade fun places like Cabo” and that she plans to “lure Osama out of hiding with the irresistible scent of” her “new fragrance, ‘Circus Fantasy.’” And if Britney had her way, she would nominate Diddy as her VP candidate, turning the White House into the White Party

Homelessness in a Discrete Living Simulation

Released in 2000, The Sims was the first computer game in its genre to engage players in the everyday activities of virtual people, or “Sims.” It is like a microcosmic version of SimCity (the urban planning/management computer game) but instead of a municipality you create and manage individual persons. The ultimate goal is to steer your Sim towards happiness via a rather traditional real-world route: hobbies, love (The Sims 3 is LGB marriage-inclusive), a family, a fulfilling career with accumulated skills, socialization, money, and good hygiene. If you won’t take it from me, listen to Deloitte

Hurrah for Ian Stewart, chief economist at Deloitte, who has perfectly articulated what I’ve been trying to tell readers of this blog for months. His message is unequivocal: buy antiques now! Admittedly his August statement to clients referred specifically to antique furniture, but I believe the same basic principals could equally be applied to antique and some modern (but not contemporary!) prints, and indeed to many other areas of the antiques market. I will let Mr.

Sunglasses From 100% Renewable Material

As the world moves towards green living, it’s exciting to see more industries develop environmentally-conscious technology for their products.  Dragon has teamed up with one of the world’s greatest surfers, Rob Machado, to create the first ever sunglasses made from 100% renewable materials.  All of the materials used for the sunglasses, including ink and packaging materials, is created from materials that are replenished at the same rate that they are consumed. The new environmental line is called Environmentally Conscious Optics, or ECO.  Machado is an active environmentalist and has used his success in surfing to spread awareness of environmental issues and take steps towards change.  I hope to see more developments from the ECO line.

Escape the PMWP (Poor Me Whining Phenomenon)

As I head out on a road trip, I thought I’d update and repost a favorite newsletter from 2004. This may have been the seeds of The Artist’s No-Excuse Guide to Self-Promotion ! Escape the PMWP I first started watching “The Apprentice” television show when an ArtBizCoach.com member alerted me to an episode in which the participants’ assignment was to sell art. That episode confirmed that you have to believe in your product (your art) before you can sell it to the public

These trousers are available in a great stretchy fabric from 1-4X, and you can’t beat the price. Alexander McQueen is known for his outrageous designs and fashionable flights of fancy.  He seems to have been inspired by the natural world lately, with butterflies, wood grain and even cloud patterns making their way into his designs. The description for this lovely high heeled pump calls the rich purple leather “conspicuously cloudy”.  It’s got a hidden 3/4″ platform and matching leather-wrapped heels. Top 5 Women’s Hat Trends For Fall

Fashionable hats have become popular in the past few years as a functional and glamorous accessory that can add so much style to a Fall ensemble.  Fall hats are a little different from Winter hats because they don’t need to provide as much warmth, so they can be a little more fashion and a little less function.  Here are my picks for the top women’s hat trends for this fall: decorated cloche – The cloche made a huge comeback last fall, so definitely expect to see this style out in full force.  The plain black cloche has already been done, so this fall there will be lots of creative embellished options with lots of colors, materials, and decorations like feathers, flowers, and chains. Image: Nordstrom tam – This Scottish-inspired beret style hat has a fun European feel.  The solid black or creme will be most popular, but there are also some clever styles with fun details. Image: Urban Outfitters bowler – This Charlie Chaplin hat pairs perfectly with Fall’s menswear-inspired styles.  The black wool is a classic, but look for more modern feminine interpretations.
