Ever been to a restaurant or bar and spotted a girl wearing a colossal wide-brimmed neon pink hat that you and your friends can’t stop staring/laughing at? Then your super-observant friend, after a few drinks and trips to the bathroom to get a better look, comes back to your table and reveals that the incredibly inane spectacle on top of that poor girl’s head is actually made out of paper-mâché and lined with images of goats? I’m usually the girl under the goat hat, the one who spent 30 minutes digging said goat-hat out of a bin in some vintage shop and thought it a perfectly fantastic idea to wear it in public.

Lauren Van Hemert is a jewelry designer who prefers to shop for her supplies in some unique places. Instead of buying traditional jewelry-making supplies, Lauren creates her own beads from found ephemera like old luggage labels, postage stamps and other printed materials. She transfers the aged images to a special type of plastic clay and creates the main beads for her jewelry designs that way. Her “ Luggage Label ” lariat necklace is created using her own beads as well as a pair of found vintage keys. The necklace is made from Swarovski crystals and pearl coins, strung together: “ Luggage Label” tile bracelet – the tiles are covered with different labels from hotels all over the world. The bracelet is strung together with sterling silver accents.
