I wanted something not too developed and resorty, but not completely desolate either. Some place that would be relaxing yet fun. I decided on Koh Phi Phi (or Phi Phi Island…”koh” means island). And I think it was the perfect choice. Dane and I went there during our travels before we started working, and we had loved it. It’s a little difficult to get to, but well worth the effort. It’s incredibly gorgeous with crystal clear water. The island is small and a bit mountainous, so there are no motor vehicles. Everyone just walks or rides a bike. Along the main road, there are great restaurants and a handful of bars. The island is popular with young Brits and Aussies, many of them on their gap year after college. The days are quiet and lazy. Most people lay on the sand and read…and turn an amazing bronze color that I could never hope to achieve in three lifetimes. And at night the bars tempt in the patrons with drink specials, fire shows, and dancing on the beach. Jackie fell in love with the island. We originally planned to stay about a week and ended up staying two. I think she would have been content to stay there for the rest of the summer. But who wouldn’t?

Jump to the full entry & travel map Lopburi, Lop Buri, Thailand C’mon, you gotta take Jacquelyn to play with the monkeys! So Dane took a day off work, and our Thai friend, Pote, came along. And he was kind enough to drive us in his car. It was Jac’s first glimpse of Thailand beyond Bangkok. We saw some rice fields and rolling mountains, a preview of what’s to come in the outer provinces. Jackie and the monkeys got along well. However, yes, there was one minor mishap. A juvenile monkey was sitting in her lap, making friends. But apparently he lingered too long and Momma got annoyed. She came up behind Jackie and kicked her in the back. It surprised Jac more than it hurt her, but in the process of jumping up, she tripped on the stairs and bounced on her butt all the way down. It looked pretty painful – stone stairs and all. But she laughed it off, and her feeling seemed more hurt than her backside.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Khao Yai National Park, Nakhon Nayok, Thailand Dane and Jeremy are working all the time and only get one day off a week, but we try to do something fun for that day. By bus it’s hard to get outside the city and back in one day, so when our friend Pote, who has a car, offered to take us to a nearby national park to visit a waterfall we jumped on it. It was about a 2.5-hour drive. About an hour and a half into it, the buildings began to disappear and were replaced with low rolling mountains drenched in green. We arrived at the park, walked down a short path, and there was the waterfall…simple as that. We played around in the water for the rest of the afternoon. There were a few young drunken Thai guys there as well, and they soon joined our group, lured by Jacquelyn’s bikini and the football Dane, Jeremy and Pote were throwing around. (Thais are very modest and normally prefer to swim in their clothes, so long-legged Jackie in her itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny, yellow (not polka-dot) bikini is quite the spectacle. And the fascination with the American football….I don’t know…it’s not a popular sport here so I guess they don’t see the ball very often.) So that’s about it. It was a good time. Just wanted to share the photos.

Another huge city – hordes of scooters, people, noise etc etc. But going back – on the way to pick up Cm’s kilt in Hoi An we met Marg & Hartley Medder doing some hard bargaining over some beads – took us a while to remember who they were but we had to tell them who we were. The long arm of co-incidence. Kath & Duncan – they want to get in touch with you – didn’t have your address with me then but will send it when we get home. They are also on a tour but nowhere near the same hotel. Had an early flight from Da Nang and huge crowds at the airport too – we don’t know we are alive in NZ.
