Illustration: Albert Herter The Ship 1913 Albert Herter was an American artist, best known for his fine art paintings, but closely followed by a range of large scale murals that he produced from about 1913 onwards through to the end of the 1920s. Herter also produced a number of tapestries and The Ship is one of the better known and dates from 1913. The tapestry itself is interesting in its style and composition as, although seemingly conventional and representational in both composition and style, it does seem to echo certain elements of the abstract pattern work, particularly within the top third of the tapestry, that was to be so prevalent within the decorative arts, and that of textile design specifically, during the following 1920s and 1930s.

In the wonderful movie, Julie & Julia , de-boning a chicken is presented as the biggest challenge facing Julie in her quest to cook through Julia’s book. In reality, de-boning a bird is fairly simple, and with practice takes just a few minutes.

After 55 inches of snow this year, a new record here in Washington, D.C./Arlington since 1899, it feels strange to think that it is almost March and that, despite the mounds of snow everywhere (there are still some large 5 -6 feet tall mounds) Spring is just around the corner! Spring means new jewelry – LOTS of new jewelry! And the Spring colours this year are wonderful, or at least I think so, probably because one of the biggest colours for Spring is my favorite – turquoise. Whether it’s called deep aqua, lagoon, or any other romantic name, turquoise is a wonderful colour that looks good on almost everyone; it is truly universally becoming. And if you are practicing a certain austerity lately, then a pop of turquoise, in a scarf, in jewelry (such as the apatite bracelet that you see above or the amazonite bracelet below) provides a touch of fashion that will enliven your spirit as well as your outfit

Guess this will be the last time I can paint this lovely building, it’s a building from the 30′s I think and stands on a very prominent spot between two rivers. (Rhine and the IJssel) You can see this building from almost everywhere and it’s definitely marks the spot as being a mark on itself as well. I will miss this lovely building, and for me it will make me think that in the Netherlands not much things are kept to get old anymore.

This could well be a new project, “Painting ugly spots” One positive thing about it is that the painting is always better. And it shows that it doesn’t matter what you paint but more how you paint it.

With my stint in Houston a few days behind me, and a much needed vacation stretching out before me, all I’m left with are the few freelance jobs I’ve taken on to keep me busy. So waking up early is….well, just an option. I can meander from under my covers as early (or late) as I want, and while enjoying the benefits of my new found liberty, I wondered how the rest of Blog Catalog feels about waking up. The discussion topic this week was simply, “What’s the First Thing You Do When You Wake Up?”. The responses came in a pretty wide variety. Going pee first thing was a trending response, as was saying a quick prayer. HaplessHermit even said he cries first thing in the morning. But the most common answer seemed to be ignoring (or abusing) that good ole faithful alarm clock.

While manufacturing prowess is usually associated with China and other Asian nations nowadays, Italy has maintained a strong manufacturing industry in Europe. Highly respected for its many fashion and niche products, it excels in both light manufacturing and some heavy manufacturing industries.

I made some small but important adjustments to the drawing on this piece, which you can compare to the previous version, if you care to. Sometimes you have to live with a painting for a at least a few hours or days (or even weeks) before certain things become apparent. In this case, I thought that a few fairly minor changes could strengthen the image, so I made them, even though it required a little work
