Next door to Birch Libralato at the Susan Hobbs Gallery, Shirley Wiitasalo shows a suite of new paintings that seem conjured from a half-remembered dream; while obviously abstract, the mind wrestles quietly to extract form from the delicate wash that the eye delivers. Wiitasalo's technique is something obliquely referred to as “transfer,” which to me suggest a careful layering of material and colour to obscure, but not quite, the one that came before

Projects Gallery did something unique for their current exhibition. Instead of choosing 25 artists for a summer group show, they chose five and asked them to each pick five more. The show’s fate rested on networking.

Following is from the PIB http://pib.nic.in/release/release.asp?relid=62636 which brought our attention to the zonal cultural centers funded by the Ministry of Culture, Government in India. By looking at the web page of the Eastern Zonal Cultural Center in Kolkata , it seems like all of the infrastructure of this center is in West Bengal .

The massive two-museum blast of Dynasty , an exhibition of 40 artists at the Palais de Tokyo and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris , is something of a moveable feast of contemporary French art – a collision of dust and Disney with a bit of dinnertime thrown in. The concept, launched by directors Marc-Olivier Wahler and Fabrice Hergott was to invite youngish artists working in France to exhibit two sets of works in each museum. (The two art spaces sit side-by-side looking out towards the Seine River).

[While I haven't seen this show in New York, I know the artist's work through her representation at local gallery Art Mûr in Montreal. She's a wonderful artist doing thoughtful work that both has contemporary and historic relevance; it's so great to see her getting attention in NYC] Recognizing the depth of her practice and the impact of her art, The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in New York recently invited Nadia Myre (along with Alaskan Sonya Kelliher-Combs) to initiate Hide: Skin As Material and Metaphor , their current multi-show series. Scar Tissue, the first solo showing of Myre’s work in New York City, presents a retrospective of the Montreal-based artist’s powerful and evocative image-creations of the past five years (including The Scar Project , Landscape of Sorrow and Scarscapes ).
