The Old College Try: Sasaki + Jessica Valentin at Red Bull 381

It's a sports metaphor, the “old college try” is, an anachronism rooted, I would imagine, in the still-innocent, romantic era when schoolboy knickers and all-male literary societies were seen as more fraternal than fey. Which suits Jon Sasaki well enough, to be sure, as his practice of “romantic conceptualism,” as he's called it, often has a charming sheen of the elegiac. For Jessica Valentin, the title is a bit more literal, in that, until very recently, she was actually in college; a very recent graduate of the University of Toronto's Art History program (as well as Sheridan College's Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning), Valentin is this year's winner of the William Huffman Award for Excellence in Studio Practice, named for the Toronto Arts Council' s Associate Director

Old Growth

There is a majesty in mature trees, and there is a regal fragility in trees long since dead but still maintaining in their place in the forest.  These particular trees stand in dense timber, protected from wind and stormy weather by their near neighbours, and, as in the best of communities, they are supported upright by their neighbours as well. .  Old Growth Oil  on gessoed board,  5″ x 7″, signed and dated This painting is available for sale – $100.

Hitting the open highway with huge vistas – Abiquiu, New Mexico, United States

Jump to the full entry & travel map Abiquiu, New Mexico, United States The next morning we hit highway 84, which was a beautiful drive to Ghost Ranch where Georgia O’Keefe lived and painted.  The Presbyterian Church now owns the ranch.  No locks on the doors and a general feeling of the Christian spirit.  Gathering places everywhere.  This place is perfectly set up for people, who want to gather to pray, meditate, bond or make art.  This week they were having a program on metal sculpture and welding.  They served the family style meals promptly and you didn’t want to be late. The surrounding area was made for landscape painting. April and I took pictures

Art without borders–Ashley Flynn at Knapp

Ashley Flynn’s free-for-all installation of paintings and drawings and murals at Knapp Gallery all flow into into each other, art without borders. The painting in Flynn’s first exhibit, Forgiven (it’s not their fault), is free, exuberant and sure of itself. Flynn is one of those artists whose impulse to make marks comes straight out of her fingertips and her soul and touches everything in sight

First couple of days… – Bangkok, Thailand

Jump to the full entry & travel map Bangkok, Thailand first things first…i forgot my walking boots. Inevitable that i forget something but it does seem sod’s law that i forget something a bit vital. oh well, at least i arrived here safe and sound and only mildly traumatised! Because of confusion over time zones, i had no idea how long my two flights would be, i eventually found out they were both 7.5 hours, with a 2 hour stopover, so yes i was travelling for 16 hours and no it wasn’t as bad as i thought it would be! Airline was height of luxury (considering it was economy), lots of movies to choose from, airline food that didn’t make me gag and sleep sets with handy eyemasks and blankets (and i restrained myself to only stealing the eyemask)

Beijing, September 26, 2008 – Friday – Beijing, China

Jump to the full entry & travel map Beijing, China After eight visits to South Korea and my long-standing fascination with its northern neighbour, or maybe it’s more fair to say its northern part, I finally decided to go there, to see it with my own eyes and attempt to get my own impression of what’s behind one of the last genuine iron curtains in the world. South from the 38th parallel there’s still an almost paranoid fear from what’s up north, and American military presence and their bases seem like an almost only guarantee of at least some kind of peace on Korean peninsula. Whenever something’s written on North Korea, then it’s inevitably in a negative context

After priming, it was time for paint again. That means more edging and more rolling!…At the end of the day all the walls have been texturized and painted, new light fixtures have been installed along with the mirror moldings….First, I removed three light fixtures in the bathroom area and spray painted them with Rust-oleum’s Hammered Dark Bronze finish….I also painted some decorative molding to be installed around two vanity mirrors for some added emphasis to the area…. china painting painters ponder

There are  group of painters in china , had taken their dream canvas of the country, duty-bound to embark on a “gold-plated” tour. After a baptism, now they are with different “Western” to return to the motherland, or “celebration” or “defeat.” They are the “returnees” in the ranks of special groups, returned to their “journey” is even more curious.
