A couple weeks ago I was laying on the couch, feeling miserable and sick, Doug had taken the kids out for the day and I get a phone call. It’s Doug, he’s at the thrift store down the street from our house and he has found an old kitchen hutch, with no back or shelves and needing some TLC but it was a great price and he thought we could restore it and try to sell it (and maybe make a little bit of money – imagine that). I didn’t feel like thinking about it so I just said “sure” bring it home and we’ll figure it out. So he loads this thing in the truck and brings it home. I finally drag my bum off the couch and peak out the window to see what we have gotten ourselves into……. it’s huge! Holy smokes – this thing looks like it’s been sitting in someone’s barn for the last 30 years! This is going to require some work. But as I get closer and I see the adorable (and original) green glass knobs, the wavy glass in the top cabinets ( I love old glass and mirrors – the wavy look of the glass or the darker look of the mirror – it just screams vintage) and the three dowels on the side for towels – I quickly fall in love! Fabulous eye Doug! But it just looks so big there is no way we could keep it. Our house is, well let’s say quaint, and we already have a lot of antiques we have restored and they all have their “spot” and I don’t want the house to feel crowded. We rope our neighbor into helping us bring it into the backyard to store it until we can start cleaning it up and restoring it. So there it sits, and there I sit in the sun porch eyeing it. I think it was on Tuesday morning when I finally went out there and started measuring it up, then I went inside and started measuring the wall in the kitchen that it would look GREAT on. According to my measurements it would fit perfectly, except there is already a beautiful antique buffet on that wall. Hmmm, so I start measuring up different spots to start moving pieces of furniture. Well, after about 30 minutes of measuring and checking and re-measuring I decide – that’s it we are keeping it and moving furniture around so it can fit in the kitchen.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Mwingi, Eastern, Kenya So after my last 4 missions in emergency response (sri lanka, mozambique, south sudan and darfur), this emergency response in Kenya is much more calm than what I’m use to. It’s what is referred to as a slow-onset emergency, brought on by a long-term drought (induced by climate change) so there’s a bit more planning than I’m used to. Basically, unlike my other projects, everyone saw this one coming, and now it’s up to us to have a well-prepared response to it. Kenya is much different from my past few countries….it’s a country where tourists visit, first of all, which means that I can actually travel on my own and do things on the weekend, which is quite a change from my last few missions….and believe me I’ve taken advantage of it. Anyways I arrived in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya and the hub of east Africa. The city is notorious as ‘Nai-robbery’, a city where you don’t walk alone after dark…also a place where you can live very well. It’s the winter now, so it’s a bit cold and rainy these months. Most of my first few weeks was spent setting up the office and administration – buying furniture, office supplies, getting the budget and cash system set up, and recruiting the remaining staff. Meanwhile my team has been performing field assessments and finalizing the list of sites where we will work (25 in total). In each of these sites we will construct structures for collection of surface water runoff…Mwingi is very hot and dry, and water resources are scarce as the rains are less and less each year – but when it does actually rain, it really pours – and generates a lot of surface runoff that washes away. Our goal is to construct facilities – earth dams, sub-surface dams, sand dams – to trap and utilize this water. Apart from the work, I’ve taken advantage of the weekends to travel a little in the area. I went 2 consecutive weekends to the area around Lake Naivasha, about 2 hrs north of Nairobi by matatu (shitty public mini-bus). The lake is full of pink flamingos and hippos, and the surrounding area used to be very volcanic thousands of years ago. The first weekend I climbed to the top of Mount Longonot, an extinct volcano, and hiked around the crater rim on top. The second weekend was spent at Hell’s Gate National Park, where I hiked the entire park north to south, passing within 30 feet or so of huge groups of zebra, groups of galloping giraffes, giant buffalo and big groups of gazelle that sprinted by. At the sound end of the park is the beginning of a giant gorge carved by yearly flash floods. I hiked the first few miles of it, climbing through the winding cave-like beginnings of the gorge, past the hot springs that join the gorge via small waterfalls, and following it as it widens to give a view of the entire valley, big rock walls on either side. The whole area is full of shiny black obsedian rock, and I passed by a few groups of geisers spewing out hot steam with boiling pits of sulphur and mud surrounding them. The lake is full of crayfish, which are delicious and served at all the nearby restaurants…and that’s pretty much the only highlight so far of Kenyan food – the primary Kenyan meal is very tough meat (floss is essential here, as the meat gets stuck in your teeth for about 3 days after you eat it) served with a heaping pile of ugali (ground corn flour cooked into something like mashed potatoes, only about 600 times thicker). But there’s all kinds of fruits and veges available in the market, so the food situation is not so bad overall. I finally a place to live, so I moved in but so far only have a mattress lying on the floor…so next job is to set up my house. That and quickly formulate a plan for 25 water structures.
