In the light of the recent allegations that well-known and established retailers H&M and Wal-Mart purposely destroyed and disposed of apparel rather than donating it to homeless shelters or any other nonprofit charity, it’s time that all Americans reflect upon their own personal choices on what to do with used items they no longer want. If you still haven’t heard about these atrocious actions, read RIMTailing’s blog post on Aim to Donate, Not Destroy, Merchandise and The Thrifty Chicks’ Why are two major retailers torturing their own trash

Illustration: Pan Pipes textile design by Harry Napper 1890s Harry Napper was probably one of the most influential designers connected with the prodigious and to some extent prestigious output of the London retail outlet Liberty. Although Napper supplied a number of textile designs, he was also involved in the design of carpets and rugs, furniture and metalwork, much of it for Liberty.

After you start collecting craftsman furniture you recognize that you'll need other decorative items to round out your interior. For me, personally, I use old glassware. I really like Fenton art glass from the 1920s and 30s Carnival glass is produced by a process known as doping, hence this glass is also sometimes referred to as “dope glass”

at the Cisneros Foundation brunch This was the fifth time I’d gone to ABMB ( Art Basel Miami Beach ) and the multi-ring circus that includes the peripheral art fairs, local museums, collectors who run private museum spaces, temporary public projects and various lectures, performances, film showings and parties. I decided to take it easy and be guided by the interests of several friends who were also in Miami for the events, spending two days with tv news producer, Jake Haselkorn, who’s spent the past 20 years covering Asia and my good friend, Berta Sichel , Director of the Film Department at the Reina Sophia Museum, Madrid, as well as meeting up with Artblog’s Roberta and Libby for a day. The following are random snapshots rather than any attempt at a synthesis

Trad Fusion – Traditional Home Magazine I saw the picture of this room in Traditional Home Magazine last year and it still impresses me. Interior Designer Mary Anne Smiley pulled this fantastic home together for a young newly married couple in Dallas. The Perry’s home is Classic Architecture with truly a brilliant mix of Mid-Century Modern furniture. William Switzer sofas, Kelly Werstler carpet and Barcelona chairs ~ Brilliant! Grand Entrance – All photos by Colleen Duffley Young and Fresh, yet still Sophisticated and Timeless. Somehow a perfect balance has been achieved.

[edit] History In A Peep at Christies’ (1796), James Gillray caricatured actress Elizabeth Farren and huntsman Lord Derby examining paintings appropriate to their tastes and heights. The official company literature states that founder James Christie conducted the first sale in London, England on 5 December 1766, [1] and the earliest auction catalogue the company retains is from December 1766. However, other sources note that James Christie rented auction rooms from 1762, and newspaper advertisements of Christie’s sales dating from 1759 have also been traced.[citation needed] Christie’s soon established a reputation as a leading auction house, and took advantage of London’s new found status as the major centre of the international art trade after the French Revolution. Christie’s was a public company, listed on the London Stock Exchange from 1973 to 1999, after which it was taken into private ownership by Frenchman François Pinault.

Released in 2000, The Sims was the first computer game in its genre to engage players in the everyday activities of virtual people, or “Sims.” It is like a microcosmic version of SimCity (the urban planning/management computer game) but instead of a municipality you create and manage individual persons. The ultimate goal is to steer your Sim towards happiness via a rather traditional real-world route: hobbies, love (The Sims 3 is LGB marriage-inclusive), a family, a fulfilling career with accumulated skills, socialization, money, and good hygiene. Hurrah for Ian Stewart, chief economist at Deloitte, who has perfectly articulated what I’ve been trying to tell readers of this blog for months. His message is unequivocal: buy antiques now! Admittedly his August statement to clients referred specifically to antique furniture, but I believe the same basic principals could equally be applied to antique and some modern (but not contemporary!) prints, and indeed to many other areas of the antiques market. I will let Mr.

Wow! We sold a lot of furniture yesterday and this “Senior Citizen who has worked since I was a teenager ” ….was really tired last night! By the way, I’ve already been talking to the Lord [most of my life in fact], about my departure from here to the home He has prepared for me and know He has all of that worked out. I just don’t like the idea of a number of government czars who don’t know me deciding if I am valuable enough to society for such and such treatment. In the midst of government grabbing for my liberties and accusing me of being a part of an organized mob when I stand up for my American freedom, I am reminded this is “Thankful Thursday” and I am truly thankful for our All Wise, All Knowing, All Powerful Heavenly Father: “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body, you are called to peace. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15
