Great view, great energy savings Sliding glass windows a plus for environmentally conscious modular home

It began with a story in Sunset Magazine on a new style of modular home that is compact, energy efficient and eco-friendly. The story on homes built by Michelle Kaufmann Designs caught the eye of woman I know who lives with her husband in a suburban community in the San Francisco Bay area.

A Guide to North American Birds by Matt Sesow

Before I went on my recent road trip I received a painting by Washington, DC. artist Matt Sesow called “A Guide to North American Birds.” I have a thing for birds and a thing for quirkiness so I really like the painting. I also buy art that I couldn’t or wouldn’t paint myself, so I end up buying bright, bold and colorful paintings which are in contrast to my own paintings that are almost colorless.

Aliens in Brussels – Althamer’s "Common Task"

On June 4, 1989, Poland held the first (partly) free elections of the so-called Eastern Block. It was the first time since WW2 that opposition parties could legally participate in the political process, and the result – a smashing success of the opposition – was the end of communism and the beginning of a new, free Poland. These elections are generally considered the single event that began the overcoming of the totalitarian regimes in this entire region of the world.

‘Cezanne and Beyond’ in Philadelphia, part three

On Monday I wrote about how Matisse and Giacometti absorbed the influence of Cezanne’s still-lifes not by osmosis, but by expunging. The relevant Matisse paintings were from 1916 (one was in the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s ‘Cezanne and Beyond’ show) and the Giacometti was from 1937. Continuing my discussion of the PMA’s show as a narrative that reveals how succeeding generations of artists remove and eliminate more and more of a key influence…

The Abstraction Game: Myra Mimlitsch-Gray

The problem with abstraction is that a subjective voyage into the unknown is precisely this: subjective. And, since the exceptional quality of my experience as the creator is something distinct from the experience of the spectator, the abstraction game becomes a hide-and-seek of subjectivities, a challenge which at any moment can be called a bluff , a mere ego trip.

An addict’s words of wisdom

Food for thought from my literary crush: I consider that a man’s brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose. A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things, so that he has a difficulty in laying his hands upon it

Takashi Murakami and Louis Vuitton Controversy

There’s an interesting article over at the LA Times on art, manufacturing, brands, and people that seem to enjoy being in court. “They may not have realized it, but the folks who snapped up as much as $4-million worth of limited-edition prints by artist Takashi Murakami two years ago at the special Louis Vuitton boutique inside his exhibition at L.A.’s Museum of Contemporary Art apparently were getting nicely mounted handbags — minus the snaps and straps.” LA Times Basically, a collector didn’t like the fact that his Takashi Murakami Louis Vuitton prints were just left over Louis Vuitton material strapped to canvas stretchers. I can’t see a problem with it

The Art of Creating Art from Art

My earliest recollections are of an elaborate grate that covered an air shaft in the house where I was raised in Brooklyn. The pattern of swirls-the positive and negative space-the completeness of the Victorian design captivated me. The vent went out into a back yard and because the brass plate so fascinated me, I created elaborate visual images in my mind that incorporated the polished plate, shadowy shaft and the leafy garden beyond

Andy Warhol the computer geek

This video, and the interview re-published at artnode , seem like more proof that the brilliance of the artist is often quite distant from the brilliance of the onlooker. Surrounded by “modern technology”, he might, in retrospect, appear like a child enjoying his toys. Especially in the interview, it seems like it’s the journalist who has all these great ideas, and Warhol just happily agrees with what he hears…

Two works by Christiane Löhr

Oh were this the universe! Were it but a combination of lines, a simple picture of perfection, were the universe a set of twigs and seeds with their mathematical omnipotence! Oh were there nothing else, nothing but the point where everything meets, nothing but the shape it all embodies. And the shadow of the reflection of a shadow of the Work, just to outscore its very depth of space, just to give us the distance we need to be closer

A brief introduction

For all you people who are wondering , “Ok,so we’ve done healthy cooking , low fat cooking and even no salt cooking! What’s so different about all natural cooking and is it really important?” Yes it is! With the growing number of pesticides and preservatives in food, I sometimes wonder how much chemical’s our bodies actually contain. Is this good in the long run? I worry about the amount of chemicals we could be feeding our children unknowingly. But is organic versus conventional any different?
