It’s tax season once again, and time to gather all the forms and tax records you’ll need to file your tax return. One of the most important documents you’ll need is your W-2 form . We always hear from a lot of people who didn’t get their W-2’s and don’t know what to do

Albert Herter and the Tapestry Ship

Illustration: Albert Herter The Ship 1913 Albert Herter was an American artist, best known for his fine art paintings, but closely followed by a range of large scale murals that he produced from about 1913 onwards through to the end of the 1920s. Herter also produced a number of tapestries and The Ship is one of the better known and dates from 1913. The tapestry itself is interesting in its style and composition as, although seemingly conventional and representational in both composition and style, it does seem to echo certain elements of the abstract pattern work, particularly within the top third of the tapestry, that was to be so prevalent within the decorative arts, and that of textile design specifically, during the following 1920s and 1930s.

The Rise-and-Shine Discussion

With my stint in Houston a few days behind me, and a much needed vacation stretching out before me, all I’m left with are the few freelance jobs I’ve taken on to keep me busy.  So waking up early is….well, just an option.  I can meander from under my covers as early (or late) as I want, and while enjoying the benefits of my new found liberty, I wondered how the rest of Blog Catalog feels about waking up. The discussion topic this week was simply, “What’s the First Thing You Do When You Wake Up?”.  The responses came in a pretty wide variety.  Going pee first thing was a trending response, as was saying a quick prayer.  HaplessHermit even said he cries first thing in the morning.  But the most common answer seemed to be ignoring (or abusing) that good ole faithful alarm clock.

Olympic Ski Jumping – No Girls Allowed!

There is no ladies’ night in Vancouver . At least not at the ski jump competition . While we may have earned the right to vote , anchor the national nightly news , and nearly took up residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, we still can’t ski jump in Olympic competition .

Government Closed… Not Really

Ginger’s note: A very special thanks to photographer Gina Gonzalez for the great 2010 Snowmageddon photo! As you all know, the Washington, DC area is under siege with Snowmageddon 2010, and the federal government in the DC area is officially closed. Even though the government in the DC area is closed, our government has offices throughout the country that are doing business as usual

Spectacles, Biennales and the Winter Olympics

Last weekend I flew home to Vancouver to attend the Sight/Sites of Spectacle symposium at the University of British Columbia. As I had not gone home to visit my parents for almost three years – this trip was a good opportunity to visit with my parents; try to see a few friends and artists; re-immerse myself in the world of art history for a few days and to feel the anticipation of the city on the eve of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games .

Am I Dating Myself?

The other day I came across an article by a woman who claimed to have the secret to finding your life partner.  This woman chose to work for 18 years on herself with experimental therapy, holistic meditation techniques and read books and took classes all for the betterment of her own self.  She wanted to erase all of her inner demons, all of her insecurities.  Then after nearly two decades of seeking love within herself, she found her life partner and they lived happily ever after.

Exercise and Heart Health

We all know that regular exercise is good for us , but sometimes we feel like we have to be marathon runners to benefit from it. Let’s face it, most of us aren’t in any shape for a marathon or triathlon, but here’s the good news: I heard a news story last week about how regular, moderate exercise really benefits the heart.

Long Distance Relationships: Doable?

I thought he was out of his mind when he suggested we be together.  The “together” part would prove difficult, since I was living in Houston, TX through the winter and he lived in California.  The idea of missing the one person in the world you love the most on a constant basis is about as appealing as living in a refrigerator, but when compared to the alternative…it can prove to be an adventure and definitely a test of love. My boyfriend and I came up with some guidelines that so far have proved to keep our relationship going.  They go something like this: Yap it Up. This might be the only time in life when being a chatter box is a virtue.  When your significant other is far away the best way to feel close is to paint them a little picture of your world as often as possible.  Tell them about the bum you stopped to give a buck to or the baby in line at the bank who wouldn’t stop screaming profanities at his mother (true story).  When space and time is set between you, there’s no detail that’s too mundane to share.

Knockout: Interviews with Doctors Who Are Curing Cancer-And How to Prevent Getting It in the First Place

World Cancer Day is marked on February 4 to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment.  As a way to acknowledge the day and to find out more about how to help yourself or others, take a look at what Suzanne Somer’s has to say about her cancer journey and the alternative therapies that she’s investigated. Suzanne Somers’ 19 th book was written as a result of being misdiagnosed with full body cancer in November 2008.  Suzanne says that her doctor told her to prepare herself and her family for the end.  See Suzanne Somers discuss Knockout (via Spruce TV) It makes me wonder, if something like that can happen to someone with Suzanne’s resources, what else is happening that we never hear about.
