A trip to the moon and back — San Agustin del Valle Fertil, Cuyo, Argentina

Jump to the full entry & travel map San Agustin del Valle Fertil, Cuyo, Argentina As the bus pulled in to Valle Fertil a kid standing with a sign with our names on it confirmed our hopes. The guy who drove us to the hostel was also one of the local tour operators and so even at midnight we booked a tour of the Valle De La Luna ( valley of the moon) for the next morning.

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you already know I try to walk downtown to the Annapolis City Dock everyday, so yes I do know where the lovely victorian piece of glass pictured above is located, however if you check out the 24 other photos on the web posted by the Annapolis Historic Commission you may be stumped in a few instances. You only have to be able to identify 20 of the 25 to be entered into a drawing for a $75 gift certificate at a downtown store

Virginia AG Cuccinelli to turn sights on VMFA?

In the wake of a decision by Virginia attorney general Ken Cuccinelli to cover up the bare-breasted woman on the Virginia state seal, officials at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond are concerned that Cuccinelli will next turn his attention to the museum and its collection. Cuccinelli’s interest in the state’s seal was first reported by Norfolk’s Virginian-Pilot newspaper. Cuccinelli is a right-wing Republican best known for questioning President Obama’s citizenship and for ending protections for gays and lesbians at Virginia universities.

Contact 2010 Photo-a-Day: George Whiteside and Harley Valentine at ONE800

George Whiteside, who's best known as one of Canada's foremost fashion photographers, was one of the founders of the artist-run centre YYZ, and has returned to those roots at One800, a gallery he opened a couple of months ago . For Contact, he's showing The Internationalists, a series of polaroids taken of street posters of foundational communist leaders; long since consigned to the dustbin of history, their images linger in ever-greater decay. Valentine, meanwhile, shows a project centred on Canadian prairie revolutionary Louis Riel.

It begins — Contact 2010

Contact doesn't officially start until Saturday, but that doesn't mean there isn't a glut of openings related to it tonight. In keeping with last year's practice, I'll run a photo here every day, from a different exhibition (not sure if the paper will do the same this year or not; last year we got lucky).

‘Graphic Heroes, Magic Monsters; Japanese Prints by Utagawa Kuniyoshi’ at the Japan Society, New York

This exhibition at the Japan Society through June 13 was a roaring success when shown in London last Spring, and if it’s not drawing equal crowds in New York that’s because the Japan Society is at least four avenues further East than the crowds are willing to gather. It’s New York’s loss

Uzbek Embroidery

Illustration: Large embroidered hanging from Bukhoro, Uzbekistan The embroidery skills and decorative pattern work of Uzbekistan are some of the most iconic of Central Asia. Although embroidery was used extensively in costume, apart from the ubiquitous cap or hat, many outside of Uzbek culture are more familiar with domestic embroidery. Many of the best examples of Uzbek embroidery are in the form of internal hangings, bedspreads and covers

Mafia Conference by Captain Fatone

If you ask people some words to identify Italy, they will probably tell you food, fashion, art, beauty and, mafia. These stereotypes are actually true, unfortunately for the last one. Coppola’s movies and TV series like “The Sopranos’” helped the world in falling in love with the Mafia myth.
