Owen Jones and Chinese Ornament

Illustration: Chinese Ornament from Owen Jones The Grammar of Ornament 1856 Although Owen Jones was to publish a volume entirely dedicated to Chinese ornament in 1867, The Grammar of Chinese Ornament , he had included only a slim chapter on the subject in his 1856 volume The Grammar of Ornament . The earlier chapter was a much smaller affair than the 1867 book, but was also relatively small compared to some of the other chapters in the book. Only four colour plates were included along with one page of text.

Tripping across the pond – No Soul for Sale at the Tate Modern

Post by Marianne Bernstein In his book The Empathic Civilization , economist Jeremy Rifkin, investigates the evolution of empathy. Recent scientific studies suggest that we are wired for collaboration. Our natural impulse is to get along with our native kin; which over time have evolved from our fellow cave men, to our state, country, or religion, to the planet at large.

Picturing Canada: first major history ever on Canadian children’s illustrated books

For anyone interested in children’s book illustration, this month is a milestone because Picturing Canada: A History of Children’s Illustrated Books and Publishing has finally been released by the University of Toronto Press . It’s the fruit of 11 years of research by Gail Edwards and Judith Saltman, plus their hordes of graduate students from the University of British Columbia. While there are about 60 reproductions of illustrations in this book, it is a scholarly study rather than a coffee-table book – but it is very readable and not boring in the least if you’re at all interested in the topic.

Roxana Pérez-Méndez: Your Fantasy is My Home

The image of Latin America functioned for nineteenth-century North Americans much as that of the Middle East did for certain Europeans: as a screen on which to project their fantasies. In the case of the Western hemisphere, these were largely of a pre-lapsarian past.  Roxana Pérez-Méndez has consistently explored the place of Puerto Rico within U.S. culture, and with her project, Este Es Mi Pais ( This is My Homeland) at the Morris Gallery at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA, up through Sept.

The Art of Tatting

Illustration: Tatted medalion design 1885 The English name of tatting is said to have derived from tatters, which would give the impression that the process would lead to a product that was both fragile and of limited use. However, this plucky lace alternative is in fact both strong and flexible and is therefore much more robust than standard lace alternatives

Brussels Lace

Illustration: Brussels pillow lace There are so many different types and aspects of lace with the name Brussels placed in front of them that it would seem as if the Belgian capital had cornered the market in lace production. Belgian or Flemish lace was without doubt one of the premium centres of Europe for hand lace production and many towns in the area had their own proud tradition of lace making. One of the reasons for Belgium being so much a centre of lace production was the high quality of flax grown in the area, so much so that the annual flax harvest and linen production was jealously guarded.
