Five Spice Pork and Potatoes Stir-fry

This recipe came from Sunset Magazine’s Stir fry Cookbook that I bought in Thrifttown for 99c, yup not even a dollar! Makes 4 servings. 2 tablespoons salad oil 1 pound lean boneless pork, cut into thin strips 2 cloves garlic 1 1/2 cups water 3 large russet potatoes (I used 1 1/2 lbs of papas chambray instead) The recipe calls for peeling the potatoes and cutting crosswise into 1/2 inch slices.

A pinch of salt for your coffee, Sir?

A small sprinkle of salt will suppress bitterness – and in some cases it can benefit the overall coffee flavor. I’ve tried it with an espresso and somehow it works, but it’s difficult to describe the flavor. I prefer my coffee black, and politely decline when offered milk and sugar.

Tips for Battling Childhood Obesity: I was on the radio!

It’s a small world.  What are the odds that of the 7 times I was on ABC’s View From the Bay, two of them would be the same as Rona Renner, radio show host and nurse extraordinaire.  Imagine my surprise when I saw her in the green room a second time…It felt as if the

Makers & Tasters: Labels in the Kitchen

Growing up in Alabama, you had to be either an Alabama fan or an Auburn fan. In high school, you were a sophomore, a senior, or a whole group of other labels that I’m choosing to forget.

Making a Home: The Single Girl Apartment

Previously in this story: The run-down charm of an old house and the community of college life. Photo: The commute where I prayed that my ‘92 Ford Tempo would get me to work and back home again. Accustomed to the activity of college life, staring at a computer screen for eight hours in a cubicle every day exhausted me.

San Rafael School District Task Force on School Lunch #1

I was nearly giddy with anticipation for our first meeting with the food service administrators from our school district this afternoon.  I was nervous that they would be defensive, or that they might have a laundry list of all of the reasons why they were unwilling or unable to make changes in our current food

De-boning a Bird

In the wonderful movie, Julie & Julia , de-boning a chicken is presented as the biggest challenge facing Julie in her quest to cook through Julia’s book. In reality, de-boning a bird is fairly simple, and with practice takes just a few minutes.

The Rise-and-Shine Discussion

With my stint in Houston a few days behind me, and a much needed vacation stretching out before me, all I’m left with are the few freelance jobs I’ve taken on to keep me busy.  So waking up early is….well, just an option.  I can meander from under my covers as early (or late) as I want, and while enjoying the benefits of my new found liberty, I wondered how the rest of Blog Catalog feels about waking up. The discussion topic this week was simply, “What’s the First Thing You Do When You Wake Up?”.  The responses came in a pretty wide variety.  Going pee first thing was a trending response, as was saying a quick prayer.  HaplessHermit even said he cries first thing in the morning.  But the most common answer seemed to be ignoring (or abusing) that good ole faithful alarm clock.

Sticky Buns – Philadelphia Style

Peter Reinhart, in his Brother Juniper’s Bread Book , claims that these are the kind of sticky buns they make in Philadelphia. I would have no way of knowing. But I can tell you that these are sensational – so much better than the empty, fast-food versions
