John Illingworth Kay Wallpapers
Illustration: John Illingworth Kay Rose Stripe wallpaper design 1906 The decorative work of the English designer John Illingworth Kay is often seen as both expansive and original, with large areas of foliage clustered throughout his work being a particular theme of his style of decoration. However, these examples of wallpaper work produced by him in the first decade of the twentieth century also show the ability of an artist or designer to control, or at least to temper, personal tastes or excesses to those of the larger public taste, or at least to that of their perceived taste. Kay produced these examples for the English influential wallpaper manufacturer Essex & Co.

Illustration: Tatted medalion design 1885 The English name of tatting is said to have derived from tatters, which would give the impression that the process would lead to a product that was both fragile and of limited use. However, this plucky lace alternative is in fact both strong and flexible and is therefore much more robust than standard lace alternatives

Maas-Fjetterstrom herself had died two years previously in 1941. However, the workshop that she had originally created was retained intact along with much of her original design work and continued to function and indeed flourish for the rest of the twentieth century and is still a fully functioning workshop today

Illustration: Bruno Paul rug design 1910 The German designer Bruno Paul is often thought of as one of the architects of the Modern movement that dominated the twentieth century. His ideas concerning minimal decoration and the functional qualities of design were early factors that spelt out the subsequent Modernist career of Paul in both interiors and architecture. Paul was a founder member of both the Vereinigte Werkstatten fur Kunst im Handwerk and the Deutscher Werkbund, two organizations that, although still routed in ideas spanning both the Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau movements of the very early years of the twentieth century, were also fundamental in pushing forward radical ideas concerning decoration and ornament and its use, purpose and function in modern design.

Illustration: Joyce Clissold Wire Netting printed textile design 1934 The textile design work of the British designer Joyce Clissold could be seen as championing the role of art textiles. It was certainly well within the parameters of the British Arts & Crafts movement despite the fact that Clissold produced much of her textile design work well after the main phase of the movement and long past its influential heyday. Clissold produced hand block printed textiles

Illustration: Indian Ornament from Owen Jones The Grammar of Ornament 1856 Within Owen Jones 1856 book The Grammar of Ornament there are two distinct chapters dealing with the ornament of the sub-continent. Indian and Hindoo ornament are two chapters that deal with the same geographical area. The Hindoo chapter deals with what could be classed as largely native or indigenous decoration within India, even though this chapter contained colour plates that highlighted Burmese as well as Indian decoration

Illustration: Kazakh man on a horse with golden eagle 1910s The word yurt is said to have a number of definitions and meanings in the Kazakh language and culture, as it does across most of Central Asia. Living area, household, immediate family or even extended family as in kin are all importantly associated with the word yurt and it can be seen that this form of habitation was central to the culture and everyday life of nomadic Kazakhs for generations. Perhaps a more correct or direct spelling or pronunciation of the word would be zhurt , gher or uy though there are others.

Illustration: Brussels pillow lace There are so many different types and aspects of lace with the name Brussels placed in front of them that it would seem as if the Belgian capital had cornered the market in lace production. Belgian or Flemish lace was without doubt one of the premium centres of Europe for hand lace production and many towns in the area had their own proud tradition of lace making. One of the reasons for Belgium being so much a centre of lace production was the high quality of flax grown in the area, so much so that the annual flax harvest and linen production was jealously guarded.
