Illustration: Isidore de Rudder Spring embroidered tapestry 1902 It was often said that the embroidered needlework tapestries of the Belgian artist Isidore de Rudder were a subsequence of her inherited textile history through the accumulated woven tapestry work produced in Belgium over the centuries.

Illustration: Virginia Abrams Reflections 5 2009 I am always pleasantly surprised and even intrigued when considering how many contemporary textile artists arrive at the genre from such diverse creative journeys and backgrounds. It perhaps says much about the comprehensive appeal of textile art that so many individuals feel compelled to take up the genre. Obviously, because of the diversity of these individual artists, textile art itself broadens its parameters immensely.

Illustration: John Henry Dearle Arras tapestry portiere 1910 John Henry Dearle is probably the best-known name associated with the Morris & Co company after that of William Morris himself and his lifelong friend and oftentimes creative companion Edward Burne-Jones. Dearle’s input into the company cannot be stressed enough. He worked himself up from the retail side and by the 1890s he had become, in all but name, the director of the business.

Illustration: William Morris Jasmine 1872 The original artwork of William Morris can only begin to give us an idea as to the creative workings and indeed journey of both the man as an individual and as the designer of prodigious amounts of fabrics, tapestries, carpets, embroideries, and wallpapers. That nature and the portrayal of the natural world were central to the artistic core of the man is undoubted, as the few examples shown here of his original design and decorative work are made clearly abundant.

Illustration: Satellite map of Croatia Today’s article was to concentrate on Dalmatian lace within the larger picture of Croatia. However, I have just discovered a ten minute video on YouTube that is devoted to the subject of Croatian lace which incorporates the Dalmatian area as well. There seems little point in writing an article when this fascinating video is freely available

Illustration: Dora Wheeler Penelope Unravelling her Work at Night needle woven tapestry 1886 The subject of what constitutes a tapestry can form a number of different parameters for different people. To some a tapestry can only ever be of the woven variety constructed on an upright loom, while others are happy to extend the parameters to include cross-stitch and other forms of needlework.

A lot of people in the nation’s capital have baseball on the brain this week. Primarily because the Washington Nationals have the first pick in Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft this afternoon but also because tomorrow is the major league debut of last year’s first overall pick, Stephen Strasburg. I have baseball on my mind because of last week’s perfect game controversy.

Illustration: Chinese Ornament from Owen Jones The Grammar of Ornament 1856 Although Owen Jones was to publish a volume entirely dedicated to Chinese ornament in 1867, The Grammar of Chinese Ornament , he had included only a slim chapter on the subject in his 1856 volume The Grammar of Ornament . The earlier chapter was a much smaller affair than the 1867 book, but was also relatively small compared to some of the other chapters in the book. Only four colour plates were included along with one page of text.
