Jump to the full entry & travel map New York City, New York, United States We made our way up to New York because that’s where we flew into the country and would be flying back out. We had saved most of our NYC sight-seeing for this summer leg of the trip since winter really wasn’t the best time to be out and about in New York. So we gave ourselves a week this time. And two days into it, my sister flew in and met us. She had just graduated from college and was coming back to Thailand to spend the summer with me! We were able to get her on the same flight with us. Since it was her first time traveling abroad, that was a big relief. And she had never been to NYC, so that was a cool added bonus to her summer travel plans. We went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Natural History Museum, Central Park (which was lovely, by the way), Times Square, took the Staten Island Ferry, saw the Statue of Liberty, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, and got to go to the Jimmy Fallon show live where we saw Steve Martin and listened to The Roots play. It was all awesome

Jump to the full entry & travel map Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and Canary Islands Well, well well….where do I start. Only those that have been to Barcelona and La Ramblas will understand the title of this…..How do you describe La Ramblas? An area of madness and chaotic restaurants and bars (and bloody gift shops run by Indian’s and Paki’s) in which the whole population of Barcelona and all it’s tourists decide to visit at the same time……..it’s unbelievable!! We arrived on Saturday evening, checked in and before heading straight to La Ramblas, decided to have a quick drink in the restaurant next door to our hotel

Jump to the full entry & travel map Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia John and I have been checking out Darwin over the last few days and we really like it. Its easy to get around and has a really multicultural aspect. Yesterday we checked out the city and a few of the sites (parliament house, the mall, the beaches and the harbour). Today we went for a swim in the wave pool that is in the middle of Darwin on the harbour. They also have a little beach (which is just part of the harbour with some sand but netted so there are no crocs or stingers) This afternoon we headed into the Mindle Beach Markets, which are world famous markets full of every food from every country you could imagine. There was an awesome didgeradoo player with a drummer who were amazing, crafts for sale and all other sorts of crazy and interesting people. Before we got to the markets we came across an interesting man in a painted commodore with army figures and little dragons and all sorts of things glued to his bonnet. Of course John stopped to talk to him and it was probably one of the funniest things we have done. He told us he was raising money to buy 2 legs for a sailor who had none – and that even if he could the money for one leg that would be better then none
to take a photo we had nto donate to his cause – which was probably his poket, but for $2 it was worth the laugh. We started off eating some croc and kangaroo then got some malay food and a bottle wine and watched the sunset on the beach with around 10,000 – 15,000 other people! It was amazing. We then went back out to the food markets and the photos tell the rest of the story really
Lets just say we are soooooo full and ive just finished off a MASSIVE bag of fairy floss (mum, you would be so proud!) Still here for a few days and then off to Litchfield National Park on Sunday.

After priming, it was time for paint again. That means more edging and more rolling!…At the end of the day all the walls have been texturized and painted, new light fixtures have been installed along with the mirror moldings….First, I removed three light fixtures in the bathroom area and spray painted them with Rust-oleum’s Hammered Dark Bronze finish….I also painted some decorative molding to be installed around two vanity mirrors for some added emphasis to the area…. Again we thanked our family for having us and wrote in their guest book then Pedro and Daniel walked us to the town square where we were going to meet the rest of the group. We loaded the bags on the roof and set off down the hill, up the hill, down the hill and round all the windy roads, encountering the usual chicken bus traffic and trucks which almost always nearly ran us off the road. We stopped at a view point which had sensational views of Lake Atitlan and its 3 volcanoes – Toliman, Atitlan and San Pedro. After a photo frenzy we continued down and onto Antigua. One toilet stop and no car sickness victims was a good thing. Back at out hotel in Antigua we regrouped and the usual 4-some met up and decided to go for a bit of pampering. After having lunch at the German Weiner place, a huge huge delicious salad Teryn and I went back to the Mayan spa place (we booked a time, had lunch and went back) for the start of our 3 hour treatment package. First thing was a 90 minute full body massage – amazing! It was so relaxing and with the orange oil that I had chosen I smelt pretty good too..

Jump to the full entry & travel map Annapolis, Maryland, United States It’s funny how life works sometimes. This trip was nowhere on my horizon a year ago…..and certainly not one this long. And now that it’s started…..I’m exhausted…..not! Well, there’s probably a little truth to that statement. It was a bit of a mad dash at the end – leaving home for 6 months is not an easy task! Dad came down to Annapolis to take my car and drop me to the airport. But, as I was trying to make sure that I had everything, he wanted to have a discussion on my dryer’s lint removal process versus my brother’s. Thankfully, we “agreed” that this discussion could wait for another time, and I got to the airport only 20 minutes behind schedule. Of course, no blame for the delay rested on my shoulders! The skycap guy was nice enough to look the other way when one of my two bags weighed almost 80 lbs (either that, or I bought him off for $5). I thought the bag weighed 40 lbs. I guess all those workouts during the past 6 months did indeed pay off. Luckily, the second bag, my “Africa bag”, was only 25 lbs. This bag has to be under 33 lbs for the hike up Kilimanjaro and for the flight from the Serengeti to Zanzibar. I suppose I will have to repack, and be the family’s courier service until I get to India. After clearing security, I boarded my Southwest flight, looked for the most attractive person on the aisle that had an open window seat, and sat down. Another packed 5-hour Southworst flight….sigh. But, once I got my drink coupons out and my ipod on, everything was perfect. I tried to treat the people in my row to a free drink in celebration of my unshackling, but the cute girl on the aisle was asleep and the guy in the middle was a dud. No problem….more drinks for me. Even the sighting of a young Fidel Castro walking up the aisle didn’t phase me. Of course, by then, I had consumed 4 G&Ts. And, thankfully for the other passengers on the plane, I did not have easy access to the aisle, because if I did I may have grabbed the intercom from the flight attendant and sang the “Copacabana” for them as it played on my ipod. Now, if only there had been a table…..

Jump to the full entry & travel map Hanoi, Vietnam A few weeks after returning from Mai Chau, I got an email from our friend Nicola. We knew Nicola from our previous time in Hanoi, so we went back about as far as friends in Hanoi go. Nicola was working as the Nationwide Senior Teacher for Recruitment at our school, Apollo. It seemed that the recruitment department was doing very well, so they were going to move Nicola to Coordinator and find someone new for her position. She suggested me, emailed me, and I decided to accept. So, as of October 1, 2007, I was the Nationwide Senior Teacher for Recruitment. The job change meant that I taught less and picked up additional recruiting duties: interviewing and hiring new teachers, posting advertisements, and a whole mess of other things. The new position placed me at Le Van Huu, a center that both Dan and I had worked at in the past. I continued teaching at HQV, but worked at LVH — at least through the end of October. Dan’s transfer would come later, but eventually, we both ended up at LVH — something we both were very happy about

Edward William Pugin Notre Dame Dadizele , Belguim 1860 Edward Welby Pugin was the eldest son of Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. He followed his father into the profession of architecture and was indispensable within his Father’s business, which he took over the running of at the tender age of eighteen, when his Father died in 1852. Much of Edward’s work, like his Father’s, was ecclesiastical in nature and it is said that he completed over one hundred church building works throughout Britain, including three cathedrals, by the time of his death in 1875
