The plan for today was to get up around 10 (we only missed this mark by 30 minutes), and head to the summer palace. We made it out of the hostel for morning dumplings by 11:00, but the adherence to our plans stopped here. Last night we talked about the possibility of getting another round of suits made, if we could get them for a better price than what we paid in Vietnam, and if we could find a suitable fabric. In our mind we set a target price of $65 if we could get the suit without a shirt/tie combo and $75 if it came with a shirt/tie. We agreed that we would be willing to go up $5 on either of these, if we couldn’t hit our target. Since Cory’s bank (Bank of America) is terrible about foreign ATM transactions ($5 + 3% per withdrawl), I agreed to float him yuan for the rest of the trip, and he’ll pay me back in U.S.

Very interesting – lots of locals on the streets – shopping, eating, gambling etc Finally to the more modern supermarkets & shopping area near the Bell Tower – everywhere very busy & crowded Finally out to the airport for our flight to Guilin Air China CA1227 departing at 18:05 for 1hr 50min flight Met by Jean & Mr Xu 2 nts at the Sheraton – good location on the Li River Walked short distance to the nearby pedestrian zone – lots of restaurants & we enjoyed out meal – did not try the local specialty dog (at least we don’t think we did)

Had nice lunch there, then back to town to the History Museum – quick tour Then up to the walkway on top of the amazing city walls – South Gate opposite our hotel Xian wall is the largest & best-preserved wall in China & one of the few ancient military facilities in the world.

I took, like, 75 pictures, but just wasn’t feeling the vibe. Maybe it was the layout of the place, like the fact that, most impressive ruin, the library, is visible from very early on, so by the time you get there, it’s just “the library up close.” That’s not to say it wasn’t stunning, however.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Blackall, Queensland, Australia BLACKALL Next stop after Charleville was Blackall, on the Matilda Highway. We were only staying overnight so we got a drive through site. (For the non caravanners among you – we don’t have to unhook the car which save time particularly the next morning) We enjoyed another camp oven dinner here (I love driving in to a park which is going to cook our dinner for us. There was a bush poet as well who was very entertaining. Blackall was a very pretty and very green country town first discovered by explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell and named in 1868 after Queensland second Governor, Sir Samuel Blackall. The very first thing you notice of course, it how green it is. This is because their water supply comes directly from the Great Artesian Basin – and boy does it smell! It reminded us of Rotarua where the smell of the sulphur makes one very nauseous. The water from Blackall did the same thing to me! Not much fun under the shower, however I must admit the water was nice and hot, even when you turned on the cold tap! There is also a great aquatic centre here and the pool was 32 degrees! Pure mineral water – great if you want a spa! The water temperature is 58 to 62 degrees all year round. It is quite surprising though – once the water has cooled down there is absolutely no smell and we were told it is the purest drinking water there is – 97% pure, nothing added, and full of minerals which is supposedly good for mind and body! We then of course proceeded to top up our 10 litre bottle of drinking water and it was excellent. Blackall is the home of the legendary ” Black Stump” which was originally used for surveying purposes and permanently marks the original Astro Station established in 1887. Surveyors placed their theodolites on the stump for latitude and longitude observations. The stump was used rather than a set of legs because it gave more stability to the theodolites. Mapping of Queensland was apparently much more accurate because of the “stump”. It was considered at the time that country to the west of Blackall was beyond the “Black Stump”. By the way, it is no longer black. Guess what?? Someone burnt it out and it has now been replaced by a petrified stump!!! Also visited the Blackall Woolscour. It operated from 1908 until 1978 when operations ceased because of the fall in the wool trade, and everything was left in tact. They just shut the door and walked out, leaving all the machinery and buildings behind

Took the Sky Safari to Taronga Zoo where we got up close and personal with some of our cutest native animals, fed the giraffes and tried to learn some quirky facts that should have helped us at Trivia Night later – but sadly we didn’t know to ask what a group of apes are called! Jump to the full entry & travel map Balwyn, Victoria, Australia G’day mates! Sorry for the infrequent updates, but it has been an incredibly busy start to our adventure here in Oz. It is amazing what you miss when you leave all your rubbish behind and start over in a new land, all those little things that you have at your finger tips during the day to get things done. When you land with only a few suitcases it is a pretty daunting task to rebuild a home from scratch! And the thing we missed the most was convenient internet access! We spent a lot of time in internet cafes doing research on houses, transport, schools, cars, etc… In retrospect probably should have purchased a 3G mobile internet from the start, but we didn’t realize how long it would take to find a place. So most of our time here has been trying to get established. The good thing is during our search for a home we saw a great many different areas of Melbourne. It is amazingly diverse, with large ethnic neighborhoods, the major ones being Chinese, Vietnamese, Italian and Greek, but also smaller pockets of German, Russian, and other European/Asian cultures. And the food is fantastic! The only thing we miss is good American BBQ and Mexican. The Victorian Market is simply brilliant, you can buy just about anything there from all over the world. It is huge! And of course there is a huge British influence here. What’s interesting is that most Aussies no longer swear allegiance to the queen, but the English monarchy is still has a ceremonial representation here and the queen is still represented on the currency and the Aussie flag has the Union Jack. And because of this influence, it is very hard at times to remember we are not in the UK! Melbourne has the look and feel of the UK, from the plants and trees that were brought over in the last couple of centuries, to the quaint cottage homes and old churches, to the turn of the century shopping areas with plentiful bakeries, cafes, milk bars and shops. What is really interesting is the low number of Yanks here. We have yet to run into any! And the locals know immediately that we are from North America, but are polite to ask if US or Canada, because I guess the Canadians get offended when it is assumed that they are Americans! But they all know where Colorado is and most really want to come for a visit some day. But the people here have been very friendly and truly are proud of their country and hope that we enjoy our time here. We befriended an Aussie family (Adam and Deb) during our boat trip in Fiji and they have been absolutely fantastic in helping us get grounded here. They invited us over for lunch, let us use their computer to do research, drove us to see rentals, and provided incredible insight into the Aussie way of life So after many travels and much debate we decided on a rental house in the quaint community of Balwyn which is about 10 km (about 6 miles, everything in metric here so constantly doing the math :) ). We chose Balwyn because of location, great schools, our new Aussie friends live here and just loved the feel of the area. The tram that we will take into Melbourne is about a 10 min walk away, there is large aquatic facility one block away for the kids to swim at, and a little shopping strip for a morning walk for a latte and a scone. The house is actually larger than we expected to get, especially in this area. Large bedrooms, updated bathrooms, hardwood floors, an old shed for stuff and a great covered back deck for introducing our Aussie friends to American BBQ. Also a old laundry off the back deck where I can start to home brew some Coopers beer! So plenty of room for you when you come over to visit! And for the scary part…driving! We relied on trams and trains and friends to get around for the first 2 weeks, but knew eventually we would need to get over it and try driving. For those who didn’t know, Aussies drive on the opposite side of the road and the steering wheel is on the right side of the car. So this week we rented a car and gave it a go. It was a little nerve wracking at first, but we adjusted fine and have had only a few occurances of trying to get in on the wrong side of the car or starting to head down the wrong way on a divided road. And only one or two honks and evil looks from other drivers! 
As far as rebuilding the house, we spent many hours in IKEA buying stuff and then many more hours assembling furniture and getting organized. Internet finally arrived on Thursday, so now we are no longer incommunicado. And we have phone service and cell phones. On Friday we bought a cheap little runabout car, and 1990 Nissan Pulsar for about US $1500. Has only 65,000 miles on it, very clean and runs fine, good enough for trips to the store or to get us to the train.

Finally An Address To Call Our Own! – Balwyn, Victoria, Australia
Jump to the full entry & travel map Buffalo, Wyoming, United States We stayed at Chatfield State Park last night. Very beautiful! We left and made our way to Wyoming. We made a side trip to Guernsey to see the Oregon Trail Ruts there. Couldn’t hardly find them, but after several turnarounds (which is not easy with our fifth wheel, but Les can always manage) we found them down a rock road and bumped our way there. I ran up the hill (which is not easy for someone from Texas with no elevation to this elevation) with just a little huffing and puffing and took some pictures. We then continued on the Buffalo, Wy. The drive was beautiful and uneventful which is very good. Tommorow we will take some side trips to look at the beautiful scenery that God has provided for us. We have so much technology with us that it is taking me a long time to just wandle through, but I finally make it. Les is very patient with me as I try to get everything figured out. Life is good. Jump to the full entry & travel map Hanoi, Vietnam Anyway, back to the travelling, we’ve crossed from Laos into Vietnam and we are in Hanoi at the moment, we had a pretty long trip getting here, it took about 24 hours to actually get from Savvanaket in Laos to Hanoi. We were hoping to get an overnight train once we were in Vietnam but had to settle for a coach in the end but it was quite cool, we had a bed on the coach and we took a load of vodka with us to help us sleep. I managed to get about 7 hours and Tiley the same, Banj didn’t get on so well, he only got about an hour he reckons and got of the coach the next day with a massive hangover
