Cosmetics giant Maybelline has signed on to be the official sponsor, but it seems only for the tents at Lincoln Center. Past sponsor, MAC , is not out of the picture

I wrote a blog entry once about how some gemstones are seasonal; that is, they seem to belong to a certain season or seasons (the main division being, however, winter and summer). This really doesn’t have anything to do with the Color Me Beautiful idea that women should wear certain colours based on their “season” (meaning the season they fall into determined by their complexions, eye colour and hair colour). This is simply a subjective feeling I have for probably very silly reasons

The Stones of Summer
Probably the most provocative (and to my mind, best) museum show of the summer so far is nothing of the blockbuster variety, which, to me, signals how hard it is to cohere large-scale shows into something with resonance. No such problem with the AGO's recent installation of Sarah Anne Johnson's “House on Fire,” a chilling true-life history of government conspiracy, cover-up and abuse. In Johnson's case, it cuts close to the bone; it wasn't a story she became interested in from afar — her grandmother lived it.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Simatai, China First day of the tour and after two and a half hours and a very bumpy bus ride we made it to the Great wall at Samatai. We started the climb up to the wall and were joined by some Chinese hawkers who followed us all the way to the top and back again. The climb was really steep and after the 7th tower we kept thinking maybe we’ll stop at the next one but we kept going to the 12th – the furthest point we could go on this section of the wall and stopped for lunch there looking back over where we’d just climbed. The views were amazing and you could see the wall carrying on for miles into the distance

Jump to the full entry & travel map San Marcos La Laguna, Western Highlands, Guatemala Last night, we made it to Panajachel in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Panajachel is on Lake Atitlan, which is a lake in the mountains and is surrounded by many different villages. Panajachel was interesting. It was a mix between the native Guatemalans and Mayan people and quite a few Americans who came down to visit and never left. We checked into a little hotel off the beaten path amidst maize gardens, greenhouses and shanty houses. Then we went out and planned to explore the village.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Champaign, Illinois, United States We finished the day in great shape, I rode with Jack John and Bob the two oldest riders on the tour and certianly not the slowest. The wind was to our backs almost the entire day, and it was only a light rain. The weather reduced the number of pictures for today’s blog, and you can take only so many pictures of corn fields. We are in the land of Lincoln and were following the “Lincoln historic trail” all day, but with the weather and the number of miles we had to go today we only had time for a couple of stops. A little laundry, route rap, dinner and then to bed.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Nice, Provence, France As we left Milan and said our thank you’s and goodbye’s to Boris and Jadranka, we looked forward to our next major destination: BARCELONA! However, little did we know that we would get screwed over and have to figure out our own route to Barca!
Here is how it started, on our way to Nice from Milan, our train abruptly stopped at the city right before the French-Italian border, Ventimiglia. Here, we were told that the track between Ventimiglia and Nice was down and we needed to find another way to our destination! This is after we had already waited a couple hours at the station so this means we definitely would miss our trains to Marseille and then Beziers! So we had 15 euros each to get to Nice by private bus. This way, we avoided the chaos from all the people trying to get on the free buses to an unkown destination.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Montreal, Quebec, Canada First evening meal and we found a big complex right across the road and had Chinese for dinner last night and then went for a walk and found where the rental car place was so that makes us feel a little more orientated. The girl there was really helpful and sent us off on the underground to the Jazz festival. Wow what a spectacle with stages everywhere and crowds and crowds of people -not really our thing but you have to experience it while you are here.

This one is a shithole. * Fort Nelson Heritage Museum Originally established as a fur trading post in 1805, Fort Nelson flourished with the construction of the Alaska Highway, making it the bustling community it is today.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Lima, Lima, Peru 7 July 2009 Having finsihed with the intrepid tour in full, we spend the morning saying proper goodbyes as we wave noe after another of us away in a taxi back to our hum-drum lives. Well all except me that is. For I’ll just get back to my travels. Paul and Gillian are here for one more night and at last I’m getting out of Lima downtown and going to flash Lima – Miraflores to be exact. Paul and Gillian decide to join me. I’ll be there for 3 nights and Miraflores is apparently Lima,s tourist district – beside the coast and lacking murders and crime. The taxi which picks us up has no choice but to call ahead and hope that we co-ordinate our arrivals at the dodgy street corner well. It turns out we do. The taxi driver is like someone straight out of a Los Angeles crime movie and like most people in Lima hasn’t a word of the english. We’re whittled along a disgusting highway in the hope of arriving at a beachside paradise. About two blocks from the disgusting highway and we’ve arrived – in Miraflores and not a palm tree in sight. Checkin’ In Things go from bad to worse as I check into the hotel – Casa Nostra – to be precise. Cynthia had phoned ahead and booked me in. It appears this was dealt with at Casa Nostra by ignoring the request and moving on. This again is all playing out in two different languages like a stand off between two people having challenged each other to a duel at dawn – me huffing loudly in english and the staff bemusedly retorting in spanish. After some time it becomes clear I’m not staying in Casa Nostra which appears like a beautiful little idyll among this mess of Miraflores side streets. Eventually they indicate that they’ve called up the street to a competitor and booked me in there. And so I find myself negotiating a spikey security gate and checking into Oro Blanco – might as well be in downtown Lima. Well at least its a bed for the night.

It's a sports metaphor, the “old college try” is, an anachronism rooted, I would imagine, in the still-innocent, romantic era when schoolboy knickers and all-male literary societies were seen as more fraternal than fey. Which suits Jon Sasaki well enough, to be sure, as his practice of “romantic conceptualism,” as he's called it, often has a charming sheen of the elegiac. For Jessica Valentin, the title is a bit more literal, in that, until very recently, she was actually in college; a very recent graduate of the University of Toronto's Art History program (as well as Sheridan College's Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning), Valentin is this year's winner of the William Huffman Award for Excellence in Studio Practice, named for the Toronto Arts Council' s Associate Director

Filed under: Style in the News Charles David is recalling thousands of shoes due to a fall hazard caused by the heel. Photo: jupiterimages We’ve fallen because of the heels on our shoes more times than we care to admit, but Charles David is issuing a voluntary recall of about 3,200 pairs of shoes due to a fall hazard — the heels could detach and cause the wearer to take a tumble. (Only one such occurrence had been reported thus far, and thankfully, it didn’t result in any major injuries.) A variety of styles and colors from both the Charles by Charles David and Charles David of California lines are included in the recall, all with item number #SAMPCHSHOE or #SAMPCDSHOE
