Jump to the full entry & travel map Argeles-sur-Mer, Languedoc-Roussillon, France After much deliberations, about where we should go (the world is our oyster), for how long, and when, we decided to head to France for a few days. Most of that decision, was based on our promise to the children that we would go to France for the holidays – of course, it was a ‘general’ remark, that turned into a …

Well…just because I know the culture and the language somewhat. So, it makes for little exchanges that are just precious
I decided to go to this market nearby. An outside market. If you look at the pictures I took for the Gildong Photo Shoot…that’s the market. On my way there, there were about four kids playing in fron of the apartment building I’m staying at. I heard the eldest kid say 위국인 (foreigner) when she saw me. I’m used to it
And I said back in Korean that I was. Then…this is so cute…one of the younger kids said to me “Older man, can you help me?” I think it is hillarious that I was called an “older man” and not something else. But I stopped and asked the kid what she needed. She said it was okay (I don’t think she realized right away that I was a foreigner and then got frightened). There was some language problems too (my Korean isn’t perfect
). But it was such a precious moment! Lastly, the older girl said, “He knows Korean!”. I replied that I did
Boy…this is a good memory

Jump to the full entry & travel map Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland Well I’m kind of in limbo at the moment. I’m super excited about my upcoming travels but also dealing with the hardship of leaving people behind, the prospect of the unknown (I’ve never been a fan with this although our constant encounters mean I’m getting rather used to the unknown), coming to terms with being on my own, and even just the administration side of travelling / moving such as packing, currencies, and accommodation. I’ve learnt to do as the Irish do, and have procrastinated the packing part, but the reality is I need to do it, otherwise, god forbid, I’ll be leaving about half my wardrobe behind.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Samarkand, Uzbekistan Samarqand was the first stop in Uzbekistan after a surprisingly easy border crossing. We were expecting this to be one of the worst with thorough searches and the rampant bureaucracy associated with the ex-Soviet states. We were through and on our way within a couple of hours – almost a record! Stayed in a lovely small hotel in the center of the city, one of the famous cities on the ancient Silk Road and once, I believe, the unofficial capital of Central Asia. The city center is a maze of narrow alleys opening out onto tree-shaded courtyards with Mosques and other old buildings dotted amongst the new. Weather getting hotter now and the garden courtyard of the hotel was a real oasis, surrounding us with fruit trees laden with ripe fruit.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Siem Reap, Cambodia Maaaaan it’s been a long day! Got to Angkor for about 5.15am. It’s quite strange as there aren’t actually any instructions in what to do – we ‘’just followed the crowd at chow time sir!’’ There are no sign boards or lights to guide you along the path, which being old is quite uneven. As you look to Angkor Wat you can see the towers dominating the skyline – you walk along a path, over a bridge and from that point we made our way over to the right hand side.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Budapest, Hungary After surviving two hours on the station late at night we boarded the train at 11pm that would take us through Hungary, Serbia and on into Bulgaria. So where do we start? As we gingerly crept about the station getting to Platofrm 6 the excitement started to take over the nerves. We found the train and discovered we were in the same carriage as the driver and the guard. A good start. People seemed friendly and amiable eventhough we couldn’t understand them! The mix of nationalities was most interesting – Bulgarians, Hungarians, Serbians, Russians and what seemed to be one lone Aussie family from Scotland! The couchette (sleeping carriage) was all set up for us to go to bed, but not for long. The Guard acted out to us that we would be at passport control and would need to be awake! Murray and I stayed awake and Bronwyn climbed into her middle bunk of a three bunk system and was out like a light. On attempting to wake her when passport control came I decided to leave her so rolled her over for her face to be visible and pulled the blankets back a little. No problems! Phew!! Leaving Hungary was no problem, as leaving most countries isn’t. A little further down the track we were to enter Serbia and to experience seeing other people being expelled from the train and taken off by the guards only to have to return to Budapest and not attempt to return to Serbia. Our hearts stopped at this stage. Did we have the necessary papers, was everything in order, had checking, checking and rechecking information prior to leaving home been enough? Fortunately yes, we had no problems at all and the ‘Passport Police’ just stamped our passports and said thankyou. Once again Bronwyn was asleep through the entire event. Such a contrast to a couple of doors up the carriage.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Manali, Himachal Pradesh, India Since I haven’t really had much exercise the last few weeks I figured I’d better do something to get ready for the trek in Pakistan. Frankly I was a little concerned about it so I signed up for a day trek to a town called Solange. To be honest I had no idea what to expect. I kind of thought it would be pretty cheesy. Lonely Planet recommends a guide in this area because of the unusal number of tourists that have “disappeared” over the years: http://www.khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticle.asp?xfile=data/subcontinent/2005/August/subcontinent_August493.xml&section=subcontinent&col= Anyway, I met my guide “Billy” at 9:30 am. We started uphill from Old Manali and just kept going up and up. Manali already sits at about 8600 ft so this was exactly the kind of thing I was hoping for. At times the heat was pretty intense. I’m not sure how many of these things Billy has guided but he took a lot of breaks. From my standpoint it felt a lot like hiking in Oklahoma’s Ouchita mountains in July (with the addition of small mountain villages and piles of yak poop).

Jump to the full entry & travel map Hebron, West Bank and Gaza The rain clearly put me in a bad mood! I got on the bus to Hebron and very soon realised I really didnt want to go but I was already on my way. I got off the bus, walked around for less than an hour and then hopped back on the bus and back to Jerusalem. Im not sure what happened but I always felt seriously hungy, thirsty or desperate to go to the toilet so – just a crap day really – nothing to do with Hebron – just me! I did, however, remembert o take my passport this time and there were no troubles getting back to Jerusalem

Jump to the full entry & travel map Gili Trawangan, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia Simply needed to get out of Kuta, it is like so touristy, like not really Bali at all, I like never go to touristy places, ughh tourists. That’s the general flow of conversation between the traveler types, I am smiling, nodding in agreement “hmm tourists, tut”, rolling my eyes, ramming my I Heart Kuta T-shirt into the bottom of my bag, mental note to self, burn T-shirt. “I got you babe” Bhono suggested I hit the Gili Islands, just a short bus and boat trip. 10 hours. I am kind of glad to be leaving Kuta, finding my feet with booking buses etc, planning the next move, getting to grips with constantly investigating options and taking the bull by the horns and just locking things in. What do I know about the Gili islands, white sand and diving, a bit of a party island. I thought I can do the party island for a couple of days then move on. I get on the boat over here, I am on the “slow boat”. They call it the slow boat, because it is really quite friggin slow, six hours on the boat, I thought it was only going to take two hours, naturally I sat at the top of the boat, naturally I forgot about sun tan lotion, naturally I was going to be mr tomato face for the next day or so. Hi, I’m John and horrifically disfigured by the sun, will you be my friend? I get burned to a crisp. Never the less I get chatting to a few folks on the boat such as Neil the Scottish bloke that has not slept, been boozing the night before, might catch up with him in Java, get name of place he will be staying at
