There are four major-league baseball teams that have never had a pitcher record a no-hitter. Two of them — the Florida Marlins and Colorado Rockies — are less than 20 years old. The others are the San Diego Padres and New York Mets, who were also the two teams involved in an unusual near miss on this day, July 21, 1970.San Diego’s Clay Kirby walked Tommy Agee in the first inning Read the rest here: Memory Lane: Kirby’s near gem gets spoiled

Art told me that he was not going anywhere. He looked terrible. Besides the pain that he’s been experiencing for days, he now has alternating chills and sweats. I intended to crawl back in and stay with him rather than meet everyone else, but he reminded me that we usually take John and Martha with us and that if I didn’t go, they might not have a ride. So I got ready for the day. About 15 minutes before departure, he decided to get dressed and make a valiant effort to grin and bear it.

Anthony is taking me as a deckie on his sailboat a Ketch called Grain de Sable. Apart from the one time where I decided to go with Flo to Malaysia after knowing him for one evening, this is probably the sickest thing I’m about to do. It’s a voyage in a very different setting

Jump to the full entry & travel map Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia I had Sunday afternoon to myself, so I went for a drive to the coast, and went for a stroll along the beach. Wasn’t really expecting much, because let’s face it, I’ve seen a beach before, but I came across a stretch of rocks along the coast, and thought I would go looking in the rock pools. Because you can never outgrow poking around in rock pools

Jump to the full entry & travel map Jakarta, Java, Indonesia After the relaxing time spent on various beaches in Bali, Gili Air & Lombok, it was time to go back to the city and visit ‘The Big Durian’ as the locals call it – named in homage to New York and a local fruit. The first thing we had to do was to go to the Qantas office and get a refund from our onward tickets out of Indonesia ( see Bali – Kuta is Cuter). Frustratingly we couldn’t do this over the phone and had to go to the Qantas office in person.

Cowen, T.: Good and Plenty: The Creative Successes of American Arts Funding. Americans agree about government arts funding in the way the women in the old joke agree about the food at the wedding: it's terrible–and such small portions! Americans typically either want to abolish the National Endowment for the Arts, or they believe that public arts funding should be dramatically increased because the arts cannot survive in the free market. It would take a lover of the arts who is also a libertarian economist to bridge such a gap

Jump to the full entry & travel map Cali, Colombia We planned on leaving on the 16th but it just takes so long to pack for a trip like this – we had to sort through everything I had brought from NYC and pack it away – what we needed on the trip and what we were going to store at the hostel. We decided to leave on Friday not Thursday and we had one good night out with Mikkel, Diana, Laura and Leidy, our family at the Casablanca Hostel. We went to an all you can eat sushi restaurant that I am not going to recommend to anyone. The service was so bad that each one of us took turns complaining on how slow they were bringing the sushi…Diana went to smooth things out, as she always seems to manage to do, by saying “you, know they are Gringos” and the waitress, almost in tears, said “I know I know” and went to scurrying around to make things right.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep As soon as I made it to Vientiane, I found a guest house, left my bag, took a nice breakfast and jumped into a “took took” (motorbike with 3 wheels) to get Charlie, my brother, at the airport. Then we rented a motorbike, visited a few pagodas and finished the day with a nice massage, herbal sauna and green tea in a little forest north of the city. It was a must for Charlie who had been working like hell the following weeks as he was switching jobs and needed relaxation.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Mendoza, Argentina Our final stop, save the trip to Santiago for the flight to LA and home, is Mendoza – the wine region of Argentina. To be honest, it has been a bit of a dissapointment. We have heard so many people rave about the place and so many guide books etc have said you should spend time here, but we think we must have missed something. Maybe it is because it is winter and there is no greenery, maybe it is because we have spent the last 12 months traveling the globe and we have become a little spoilt, but, well this stop has been pleasant but nothing special. Enough of the negative..

Jump to the full entry & travel map Strasburg, Colorado, United States Coming from a farm community where farms are described in terms of one hundred acre blocks and are usually homesteads with original settlement houses intact, the farms of the Midwest are imposing. In this area they talk about sections of land and of thousands of acres of crop to be harvested. Many of the farmers live in or near a small community that serves as the economic center for the region. The town is usually associated with a local grain elevator and sits near the rail line. The towns will usually have a school, a hardware store, a machinery dealer, a bank, a newspaper, and if they are lucky, an assortment of medical and professional offices. The land registry office seems to be a big part of many communities. Some will have local museums that guard the culture and history of the town and county. Of course they all have a local diner where the locals gather for coffee, just like in the movies. The ‘main street’ is often at right angles to a highway or major road that runs parallel to the rail tracks. larger towns will have a highway strip where you will find a service station or two, maybe a chain restaurant, and other service industries. The private houses are on streets behind the main street and, unless close enough to a major center to encourage commuters, are a mix of early 20th century and post World War II architecture. All have unique characteristics, put patterns of existence are starting to appear. The people are friendly and all, not just the farmers, anxiously await the fulfillment of a successful harvest. The harvest crews are a boon to many local businesses struggling to survive and help to ensure that the local community has resources to carry them through the winter into another cropping season. As you move away from town, you first pass a few farms with a home and outbuildings to service the machinery of the operation. There may be some grain bins and other sheds. A little further out you may see a grouping of trees with a lone silo standing sentinel over a former homestead, all buildings having disappeared. If you are lucky you may spot the remains of an old house, barn or even a church or a school house. Then you find yourself noting that trees are becoming fewer and fewer and at times you can look in all directions and see nothing but wheat fields. As I mentioned earlier, some fields may hold this years crop, others have been fallow and are awaiting September planting for next years crop. The land is more rolling in Colorado than in the part of Kansas and Oklahoma that we have seen, but you can still see for miles. You can watch a storm build and dissipate before the weather front even comes close to you. Antelope are beautiful animals that are often seen grazing in small herds. Prairie dogs abound. Rattlesnakes are common. Our campground has some very friendly rabbits!

Jump to the full entry & travel map Pacifica, California, United States OK, so I had to explain that jingle to the girls. We rode the cable cars, had a nice lunch at Fisherman’s Wharf, saw Coit tower, visited the souvenir shops, etc. We rode the BART and had a nice day. It was still quite cool — probably never got to 70 degrees. This morning we were able to watch the whales literally from our bed. The whales are swimming very close to shore right now and since our bed slides out the back, we were looking right into the ocean. The four of us spent 30 minutes watching the whales, some of them even breaching! Great sight!

Jump to the full entry & travel map Pacifica, California, United States We drove from Yosemite Village where it was nearly 100 degrees to just south of San Francisco where it was in the 60′s! We had enough time to do laundry (sigh, it just has to be done), get some groceries and take a long, hot shower! Our site is literally on the Pacific Ocean. Our picnic table looks over the cliff into the ocean. Quite the view! The waves are quite big and we saw some surfers as we searched for the grocery store. Tonight we stayed in and ate popcorn and watched a movie. Tomorrow it’s off to see the city.

The campsite electric had both the standard IEE plug as well as the French version at 9amps and there was a water tap on each pylon There is a small bar and restaurant where you can get meals to eat in your outfit or tent but the bar does close early (7pm) like a lot of establishments in rural France
