Tubing and Drinking (buckets) in Vang Vieng — Vang Vieng, Viangchan, Lao Peoples Dem Rep

Jump to the full entry & travel map Vang Vieng, Viangchan, Lao Peoples Dem Rep Basically Vang Vieng is set up for the sole purpose of getting incredibly drunk on “buckets” – which are exactly what they say on the tin namely buckets of cocktail (usually whisky and mixer) – and tubing which entails floating down the river on a large inner tube whilst stopping off at all the bars for beer and free shots along the way. The bars all have some sort of rope swing or waterslide which was entertaining and rather dangerous.

Jeep to Sapa and back, Day 2 — Phu Yen, Vietnam

Jump to the full entry & travel map Phu Yen, Vietnam I would never have guessed that but it proves that in Australia the “water situation” is way worse than what we have in Israel. They also don’t have rains lately and the water is being controlled. For example it’s a shame to say that you’ve spend more than 2 minutes in a bathtube.

Berry Funny Farm — Stanthorpe, Queensland, Australia

Jump to the full entry & travel map Stanthorpe, Queensland, Australia My first job in Australia was picking raspberries on a farm in Stanthorpe, which is a small town in South Queensland, where in winter (now) there is a possibility of snow!!! I arrived on Tuesday night and put in a room with 3 other girls, Grace, Jenna and Amy. Then i was introduced to the other 6 people on the farm, 2 were in their camper van (Simon and Katherine, who were sacked because the farmer’s wife didn’t like them) and the other 4 (Paul, Leigh-Anne, Una and AJ) were sleeping on an old clapped out bus which was also our kitchen! I was warned about how strict the farmer and his wife were about people picking fast enough, and as it was piece work at $1 a punnet you had to pick fast to earn any money. My first day was OK and we worked the full day, from then it went down hill.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Chiang Rai, Thailand This morning we travelled north again to a town called Chiang Rai where we went to the Hill tribe museum run by the PDA (Population and community Development Association). At the museum we were shown a video of what to expect from the next three days of trekking and also told us about the hill tribe people and their cultures and also what we should and shouldn’t do while there, for example, me and women (including married couples) do not sleep in the same rooms

Favourites: The Albright Knox

Working on a story about the effort sparked by David Liss and Gregory Burke to bring a bonafide Toronto Biennial to fruition , I took the opportunity to drive down to Buffalo to visit the Albright Knox , which, it so happens, is the force beyond Western New York's own biennial event, ” Beyond/In WNY ,” which opens in September. It's comprised of about 30% Toronto artists, but nevermind that for the moment; part and parcel of my meeting with the Albright's director Louis Grachos and Hallwalls director John Massier was a lovely tour of the Albright

Music-themed ink drawings by Kagan Mcleod

Do check out this new blog by the very prolific artist, Kagan Mcleod , focusing on his favourite musicians (above = Freestyle Fellowship). Says Kagan, This is just a random collection of fan art, mostly done in the hour before I go to bed, for fun. My tastes are pretty wide so I hope there will be something for everyone — I’d say my favourites are almost everything ’50s, ’60s and early-’70s, along with ’80s and ’90s rap and R & B, and a scant helping of more recent stuff

Owen Jones and Chinese Ornament

Illustration: Chinese Ornament from Owen Jones The Grammar of Ornament 1856 Although Owen Jones was to publish a volume entirely dedicated to Chinese ornament in 1867, The Grammar of Chinese Ornament , he had included only a slim chapter on the subject in his 1856 volume The Grammar of Ornament . The earlier chapter was a much smaller affair than the 1867 book, but was also relatively small compared to some of the other chapters in the book. Only four colour plates were included along with one page of text.
