Gleam, Glimmer, Shimmer!

According to Vogue and other important fashion magazines, gold is back in fashion. Of course, I don’t think that it was ever out! I love the gleam of gold, and while I will concede that there are certain gemstones that are best served by sterling silver or white gold, (think rose quartz) I generally prefer my own jewelry to be gold or a mixture of silver and gold. One of my favorite combinations is lapis, carnelian, and turquoise; all of these gemstones look great with silver (although lapis always looks better with gold), but put them all together and you’ve just got to have yellow gold to match the richness of the colours! Above , a unique bracelet with lapis, carnelian, and turquoise accented with 14 karat goldfilled elements (with the exception of the toggle which is vermeil), and below, the matching necklace and dangling earrings

The November Birthstone: Citrine

I’m very fond of citrine, the gemstone ranging from a pale yellow to a dark orange. First, I just love the colour yellow; second, citrine is an extremely versatile gemstone that looks great with many different colours. I wear it often with black because I like the contrast of the yellow against dark colours

Busy, Busy, Busy

The Christmas rush is upon us already! This is going to be a short post, just to get out some of the newer things that will be on the website soon. Above a pretty blue aquamarine bracelet that features matte lampwork beads in soft blue and khaki and a second strand of sterling chain with 3 little charms. Below, a long aquamarine necklace that drops just at or below the bustline (depending on where yours is!) The next jewelry piece is a thin silver bangle bracelet that has faceted rondelles of tourmaline at intervals.

TGIF: Periodic tables of food

Does food fit into this table? Here at Khymos I aim to cover things related to food and chemistry, and as I stumbled over a periodic table of cupcakes (with clickable “elements” linked to recipes) I couldn’t resist to dig a little deeper. And look what I found! The periodic table of elements is iconic, but the periodic table has also become an organizing metaphor for all sorts of things, including food .

Oh, so yummy

I checked out Madhur Jaffrey’s Step-by-Step Cooking from the Mérida English Language Library and now I want a copy of my own! Her World of the East, Vegetarian Cooking is one of my favorites. This one has wonderful meat recipes too. So far I have made Sichuan Shredded Beef with Carrots and Chiles , Pork with Long Beans and Chives , Chickpeas with Garlic and Ginger , Miso Shiru (Pacsadelli has Aka miso in the refrigerated section) , Easy Beef Curry and Summer Soup with Pork and Cucumber .

Caitlin Erskine-Smith, Writing Down the Gauntlet @ Luminato & Tug of Warp @ Scotiabank Nuit Blanche

I first fell in love with Caitlin Erskine-Smith’s work at the Luminato Box in Sam Pollack Square during Luminato, the Toronto Festival of Arts and Creativity last June. As I visited the Luminato Box each day of the ten day festival, I became intrigued and fascinated with the way each artist chose to utilize the space. While some artists used the space much as they would any other gallery space, others such as Erskine-Smith integrated their work within the space.

The Expecting Creator Of Matter

Watch the edges; yet another birth, another coming-to, another attempt at elucidation, lucid, try lucidity, for a change, just watch the edges, and also, try to aim at the opaque, but where’s the opaque in the translucid, and how, how does it Elucidation: an act of explaining that serves to clear up and cast light on . The splendid, harsh ambiguity of words, the clustering of them, the annoying coming-to, they do not leave us they do not, they do not leave us, an act of explaining, take that, an act, ex-plain, serves, clear, clear up, cast, cast, cast, light.

Fall Collection: Part V

No, I’m not finished posting the new Fall Collection – not by a long shot! Because I am doing the photos, pricing, and web myself without help since my move, it means that I am going much more slowly than I would prefer. However, if you like anticipation…. Today I have another mixture of bracelets beginning with the blue lace agate and amethyst bracelet that you see at the top.

Fujiwara Takahiro in Toronto & Kitchener

As I was still installing the next exhibition in the gallery , I decided to take advantage of the fact that I was not open last Saturday and headed to the University of Toronto Art Centre to catch Fujiwara Takahiro’s artist talk. Fujiwara Takahiro attracted the attention and captured the imagination of thousands with his work Into the Blue exhibited in the Toronto Eaton Centre as one of the Scotia Bank Nuit Blanche Zone A exhibitions in 2008.

The New Fall Collection – Part II

The following jewelry pieces feature gemstones in colours that are based on Pantone’s colour guide (Pantone produces the dyes that are used by the fashion world, so that they are the true forecaster of the hottest colours). Above, the double strand bracelet has three of the season’s hottest colours: olivine (in Swarovski crystals); majolica (kyanite); grey (rutilated quartz).

Why I live in India.

Okay, it took me slightly longer than a day, Jose, my apologies. (For those not intimately engaged in our comment conversation, Jose, a reader on this blog, asked why I came to India. Something tells me he would prefer to ask why the heck haven’t I left yet—and he’d be happy to show me the door—but, as is his way, he was very polite.) I think about this question—why India?—a lot because I get asked it a lot
