This little cartoon is rather cute… now..I wasn’t nearly as ‘cute’ while on the phone with the Tech Guys at Time Warner Cable on Wednesday last. I had actually checked my email and my shop per my usual “have my coffee/wake up” routine..

Answering the same question over and over again (gracefully) in a face-to-face conversation

After Monday’s post about implementing a policy for answering questions , Julie Thompson commented: I get the same questions over and over, but this happens much more often when I do a show, not so much in my inbox.

The Way Things Go and Pass

Fischli and Weiss, Der Lauf Der Dinge (The Way Things Go), video, 30′, 1987 Honda Ad, 2003 OK Go – This Too Shall Pass, 2009 I remember the choreographer João Fiadeiro once showing Fischli & Weiss’s work during some seminar or workshop and talking about what in his mind made it so impressive : necessity. Although it might seem like anything can happen, what happens is exactly what needs to happen

Hannah Ryggen and the Ja Vi Elsker Tapestry

Illustration: Hannah Ryggen Ja vi elsker tapestry This tapestry produced by Hannah Ryggen is very particular to both a time period and that of geographical context. It portrays a celebration of the 900th anniversary of the founding of Oslo in 1950. Indirectly, the Norwegian capital was also celebrating forty-five years of independence from centuries of domination by its neighbours Denmark and Sweden, but also five years from the forced occupation during the Second World War by Germany

The Grand Mantelpiece Headboard

A mantelpiece is grand over a fireplace, but it just so happens to also be the perfect fit behind a queen-sized bed. Let’s pull back the covers and I’ll show you how we turned this mantel into a headboard. We found the mantel on Craigslist.

Splogs – what are they and should I be worried?

Joel Williams, the Blog Tech Guy , joins us this week to help us understand splogs and why we should worry about them. Lately, I’ve been receiving multiple trackbacks from the same ISP.  Different blog post titles, but all pointing to one of my popular blog posts.  I became suspicious and contacted Joel to find out what to do.

Terry Jarrard-Dimond and the Art of Spatial Awareness

Illustration: Terry Jarrard-Dimond Crush The work of textile artist Terry Jarrard-Dimond is one of precision both in colour and in line. It is not surprising to learn that the artist worked 3-dimensionally as a sculptor for many years before coming to textiles, as these five pieces by the artist shows.

Bridal and Maternity Fashion

It must be a year of new beginnings, because my life is currently filled with people who are either getting married or having babies. I’m doing neither (already married, don’t want babies), but nonetheless I am often asked about what’s hot for bridal wear or where one can shop for stylish maternity fashion. Honestly, I don’t know the answers.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Wave Pattern

Illustration: Charles Rennie Mackintosh Wave Pattern Charles Rennie Mackintosh produced a number of differing textile design pieces with the title of wave . A number of them were produced during the early years of the First World War and reflect the growing changes that had started to appear within the British decorative arts in the few years before the war, particularly with new concepts and ideas being put forward by such people as Roger Fry and his Omega Workshops

Eigenwijs schilderen in Nijmegen. Holland.

Last Thursday we went painting in Nijmegen with our little group. ( Leida Blom and Silvester and me.) It rained quite a bit and then to paint a ship that’s called “stubborn” was funny. “Eigenwijs schilderen in de regen.” Nijmgen, Holland.

Owen Jones and Mexican Ornament

Illustration: Mexican Ornament from Owen Jones The Grammar of Ornament 1856 Perhaps one of the seemingly oddest incorporations in Owen Jones The Grammar of Ornament published in 1856 was that of Mexican ornament. Interestingly, but perhaps puzzlingly, Jones placed his illustrations towards what he called Mexican ornament within the chapter dealing with Greek ornament.

Back at Bennik Westervoort, Holland.

Although they fore-casted heavy rain today, the Sun broke through several times, … I didn’t want to take any risk so I went to Bennik a nearby shipyard, where I painted often.

Sandra Woock and the Function of Movement

Illustration: Sandra Woock Backspin The textile artwork produced by Sandra Woock is very much open-ended as far as experience and interpretation are concerned. The artist seems intent on both personal observation and understanding originating within the individual, rather than that of the artist. Although much of the creative interpretation and analysis of artwork is subjective, many artists do try to limit, or at least set some forms of parameter around the interpretation and explanation of their work
