The late, great Dave Stevens drew comic book characters that rocketed right off the page. I was reminded of that when I got a look at a very special new book from IDW Publishing that has just gone on sale and will be available for pick-up at Comic-Con International in San Diego in July. Here’s the cover to this massive, black-and-white hardcover edition called “ Dave Stevens’ The Rocketeer: Artist’s Edition “… The Rocketeer is a superhero created by writer/illustrator Dave Stevens

Illustration: Charles Rennie Mackintosh Chrysanthemum pattern work Although Charles Rennie Mackintosh is usually known for two specific forms of flower used repeatedly throughout his decorative work, namely the rose and the tulip, there were other flower forms that although not becoming a large part of his extensive repertoire, were nonetheless an interesting part of the process of the Mackintosh phenomenon. The five illustrations shown here all have the chrysanthemum at its centre

I love May, the month of my birthday, for its flowers, green leafy beginnings shooting from the ground, and for the life that suddenly moves from inside stuffy houses to the fresh and fragrant outdoors. I always think of it as the month of emeralds, and the emerald is truly an appropriate birthstone for May.

George Whiteside, who's best known as one of Canada's foremost fashion photographers, was one of the founders of the artist-run centre YYZ, and has returned to those roots at One800, a gallery he opened a couple of months ago . For Contact, he's showing The Internationalists, a series of polaroids taken of street posters of foundational communist leaders; long since consigned to the dustbin of history, their images linger in ever-greater decay. Valentine, meanwhile, shows a project centred on Canadian prairie revolutionary Louis Riel.

Contact does an admirable job each year of helping make clear that photography isn't just a privileged practice of the first world, taking the rest of the planet as grist for its image mill — not anymore, anyway, or at least, not as much; that's another story all by itself, I'm afraid — but the advent of more accessible technologies has meant a blossoming practice in places where picture-making wasn't a hobby, but a luxury.
