Joyce Clissold and Textile Design
Illustration: Joyce Clissold Wire Netting printed textile design 1934 The textile design work of the British designer Joyce Clissold could be seen as championing the role of art textiles. It was certainly well within the parameters of the British Arts & Crafts movement despite the fact that Clissold produced much of her textile design work well after the main phase of the movement and long past its influential heyday. Clissold produced hand block printed textiles

11 min, 16 mm film, B/W, no sound Camera: Bill Rowley Edit: Elaine Summers Dir: Elaine Summers Prod: Hans Breder, Iowa University There are two things about this short fragment I love. The first is the choreography of joy. The slow-motion allows us to better appreciate the flow of the common movement, the combining of the bodies, the contrast between them and everything that happens around them.

Illustration: Indian Ornament from Owen Jones The Grammar of Ornament 1856 Within Owen Jones 1856 book The Grammar of Ornament there are two distinct chapters dealing with the ornament of the sub-continent. Indian and Hindoo ornament are two chapters that deal with the same geographical area. The Hindoo chapter deals with what could be classed as largely native or indigenous decoration within India, even though this chapter contained colour plates that highlighted Burmese as well as Indian decoration

Illustration: Brussels pillow lace There are so many different types and aspects of lace with the name Brussels placed in front of them that it would seem as if the Belgian capital had cornered the market in lace production. Belgian or Flemish lace was without doubt one of the premium centres of Europe for hand lace production and many towns in the area had their own proud tradition of lace making. One of the reasons for Belgium being so much a centre of lace production was the high quality of flax grown in the area, so much so that the annual flax harvest and linen production was jealously guarded.

We travelled a few hours south on the bus, then we donned our newly bought Australia hats (Jen had the classic cork hat, whilst I had a wooly green and yellow one!) and rocked up to the Surf and Sun hostel. that evening was fairly eventful, as just outside of our hostel window the telegraph pole and wires caught fire! we were plunged into darkness for several hours, as they got a generator. Exciting eh?

I’m writing this and the sun is streaming thru all of the windows, the window is open, there’s mesh on all the windows Chris so you don’t need to worry, but it’s windy. It’s still a warm day, I’m going to read some leaflets, take Harry for a walk, just generally chill out today and try to settle as I’m still not settled and don’t know what I’m doing next :-/ It ended up raining which was frustrating as I’d psyched myself up to go down to the beach, got to the end of the road and the rain starts, it got worse so I decided just to walk around the block then back to the house

Jump to the full entry & travel map Sydney, New South Wales, Australia Straight from Australia Zoo we hopped on the greyhound bus headed to Byron Bay, a really cool surfers town in between Brisbane and Sydney. We had been told that it was a real party town and when we arrived at 11:55pm on a saturday night all was revealed to be true, getting directions to our hostel would have been easier to get from a deaf Chinese man than our fellow drunk travellers.

At the end of April, Shirin Neshat’s film installation The Last Word (2003, above) premiered in Washington at Irvine Contemporary. It’s one of the most important works of art made in the last decade. Seeing it for the first time in several years — and for the first time since Iranians protested the country’s last election — reminded me why

In the wake of a decision by Virginia attorney general Ken Cuccinelli to cover up the bare-breasted woman on the Virginia state seal, officials at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond are concerned that Cuccinelli will next turn his attention to the museum and its collection. Cuccinelli’s interest in the state’s seal was first reported by Norfolk’s Virginian-Pilot newspaper. Cuccinelli is a right-wing Republican best known for questioning President Obama’s citizenship and for ending protections for gays and lesbians at Virginia universities.
