Day 20 – Night Train Ride – Xi’an, Shaanxi, China

Jump to the full entry & travel map Xi'an, Shaanxi, China We took the night train from Xi’an to Beijing. We left the hotel at about 6:45 pm.  When we got to the train station, it was very different from what I expected.  First, we parked several blocks down the train station.  There were porters on bicycle carts to help with our luggage.  It is one of the ways the local people make money.  As we got closer to the train station, it looked more and more like a parking lot.  Going through security seemed a little pointless since I am not sure what they were looking for.  They x-rayed every bag, but there was nothing, as far as I could tell, that was not allowed or confiscated.  When we went insider, there were people sleeping on newspapers and blankets everywhere.  We went straight to our platform and right onto the train.  It is a good thing because we got on the train about five minutes before 8 and the train left at 8:10

Toontown – Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada

Jump to the full entry & travel map Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada On Wednesday, we arrived in Saskatoon, Canada greeted by Sara (Kara’s sister), the stewart family, and yes COLD weather!  We enjoyed several chats with the Stewarts, splendid hospitiality at both homes, and good times next to the Saskatoon river ( Shakespear play-Hilarious!!:) Lindsay was revived in Saskatoon and slowly got his voice back, but simply had to share it with his wife…now Kara is trying to get her voice back.  We waved good bye to Ma and Pa Corbett on Sunday-due to catch a plane to Calgary, Alberta and then hop on a train that will take them through the Canadian Rockies for a couple days. And finally, they’ll enjoy some time in Vancouver, British Columbia. So, after our good byes to all the wonderful Canadians in Saskatoon, we (Linz and Kara) headed south to Rocanville, Saskatchewean to say hello to the Woods again..now that Lindsay had a voice!!  Enjoyed an evening with friends in the area and headed home to South Dakota Monday afternoon!  And now….Mexico here we come!!!!! Looking forward to relaxing days in the sun…our second honeymoon:)

Boryeong Mudfestival and The End of the Sememster – Daecheon Beach, South Chungcheong, Korea Rep.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Daecheon Beach, South Chungcheong, Korea Rep. Well, it’s that time of year again where the weather gets hot and damp, and kids are out of school for the summer… Last week, my friend Rachel, the friend I visited in Shanghai, came to visit me in Korea!  She was only here for a few days, and it was my chance to show her around Busan for a bit.  I decided to taker her to the Jalgachi fish market…  I had never been there before….given my aversion to crustaceans and seafood being eaten alive, but it’s one of the “must-see” places in Busan, so we gave it a go.  I just tried to be a non-objective observer through the lens of my camera, but Koreans like to get one and all involved.  Before we knew it, we were having live octopus offered to us, and I was being felt-up by what Kim later referred to as a “Jalgachi Hajuma.” Said with a very specific tone–as though her behavior was to be expected from a woman who cut up sea creatures every day of her life…  Apparently this woman was impressed with the size of my body parts, and wanted to basically…cop a feel.  I’m sort of used to people pointing out my size here in Korea, but rarely do I get groped.  The humor I immediately found in the situation, quickly turned into more of a hysterical get-me-out-of-here-why-does-this-always-happen-to-me maniacal laughter, and left me desperately wondering how to get out of the situation…

HOW TO STUDY LA DOLCE VITA IN SIENA? Ten steps to experience Siena and the Sienese life

When I first mentioned the name of the course I was going to follow in Siena to one of my best friends, she only giggled. La dolce vita, that’s nothing you can learn – in her opinion. But trust me: once you enter the magical world of this course, the Italian way of life will have an everlasting influence on everything you’ll do! La dolce vita definitely is not the same as the famous dolce far niente.

HARBORSIDE HOTEL AND MARINA – Bar Harbor, Maine, United States

Jump to the full entry & travel map Bar Harbor, Maine, United States Me and my daughter took our camera and dropped by the Harborside motel today, and brought you all some really good photos we shot from their property.  This is one of the finer motels intown, so staying here won’t be cheap, but I don’t think you will find a better place to get some R&R.  I just realized I can’t add the photos as I write this, but I will download them at the end.  The day started out with a brilliant sun, but as the day wore on, the fog began to come in, as some of the photos will show.  I saw at least three tennis courts, outside spas pools, and what appeared tobe a salt water pool as well.  This is a large motel for sure.  It has several dinning places.  The Bar Harbor Club – resort, spa, tennie – as the sign says, sits right next to the motel, and both are owned by the same owner. The grounds were very well upkept with bright bunches of flowers everywhere, And the motel sits right on the water, as the pictures will show.  You can sit on the balconey at sunset, as many were, and look across at the vanishing sand bar that connects our island to Bar Island further out in the harbor.  Once the tide comes in, Bar Island is cut off, and any walkers who didn’t leave the small island are stuck there

Thr route into Bolivia…… – Tupiza, Bolivia

Jump to the full entry & travel map Tupiza, Bolivia Getting out of Salta was quite straight forward. The best bus we could get was a Semi-cama and, because it took 7 hours to reach the border town, La Quiaca, we took the midnight bus, we would have the full day to get where we needed to go, Tupiza, still have time to take a look around and try to book a tour of southwest Bolivia. We did just that but the sequence of events was more of an uphill struggle than we had imagined… The bus to La Quiaca arrived an hour early causing some commotion on the bus among tourists as to whether we were actually at the final destination or whether we did indeed have another hour before arriving.

Glacier Trekking! – Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand

Jump to the full entry & travel map Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand What a day!  I trekked a mofo glacier by the same name as the wee town that im staying in, Franz Josef.  It was obviously an organized trek as im no expert.  It was truly magnificent!  This is a first for me…being on any sort of glacier and it blew me away.  Im gonna hopefully let the pictures do most of the talking. The glacier is situated in a valley stuck between two mountains, it’s aboot 1km wide.  It was aboot an hour hike to get to the bottom of the glacier then another hour of steep incline on rock, gravel (which was hiding the glacier) before we really got to the good stuff, the pure white ice of the glacier, (sometimes blue when the sun shone on it) and was able to see the pure size and magnitude of it.  We had 6 hrs on the actual glacier, hiking, trekking, slipping through crevasses, up, down around the ice.  The guide who has been doing it for 3 years says there are still parts she hadn’t ventured to so it truly is always different…good to keep it fresh.  I just loved walking in my crampons (ice picky things that go on shoes) along the ice, squeezing through holes, wee caves, crevasses and just taking in the pure beauty of it all.  And it only lightly rained for like an hour which is unheard of.  It always rains here. The sun was shining bright most of the day, so we were very fortuante.

Where to Part?

It may seem a minor part of our style–no pun intended–but the location of our hair part can define how we look – and moving that part can change our entire appearance! Sxc.hu Don’t stress though. I consulted celebrity stylist Robert Ramos , and he gave us some fabulous tips and tricks to find the most flattering part for our face! Long-Faced Gals If you have a narrow face, avoid center parts because it elongates and extenuates the narrowness of the face

Bruce Nauman’s hanging chairs become us, part two

Continuing from yesterday’s post about Bruce Nauman’s 1981 sculptures South America Triangle and Diamond Africa with Chair Tuned, D.E.A.D. : … Both sculptures reminded me of American behaviors that I’d read about in the 2007 International Committee of the Red Cross report that concluded that the Bush administration tortured detainees

day 10 friday 19th december – Siem Reap, Cambodia

Jump to the full entry & travel map Siem Reap, Cambodia Maaaaan it’s been a long day! Got to Angkor for about 5.15am. It’s quite strange as there aren’t actually any instructions in what to do – we ‘’just followed the crowd at chow time sir!’’ There are no sign boards or lights to guide you along the path, which being old is quite uneven. As you look to Angkor Wat you can see the towers dominating the skyline  – you walk along a path, over a bridge and from that point we made our way over to the right hand side.

Budapest and Beyond – all by train – Budapest, Hungary

Jump to the full entry & travel map Budapest, Hungary After surviving two hours on the station late at night we boarded the train at 11pm that would take us through Hungary, Serbia and on into Bulgaria. So where do we start?  As we gingerly crept about the station getting to Platofrm 6 the excitement started to take over the nerves.  We found the train and discovered we were in the same carriage as the driver and the guard.  A good start. People seemed friendly and amiable eventhough we couldn’t understand them!  The mix of nationalities was most interesting – Bulgarians, Hungarians, Serbians, Russians and what seemed to be one lone Aussie family from Scotland! The couchette (sleeping carriage) was all set up for us to go to bed, but not for long.  The Guard acted out to us that we would be at passport control and would need to be awake!  Murray and I stayed awake and Bronwyn climbed into her middle bunk of a three bunk system and was out like a light.  On attempting to wake her when passport control came I decided to leave her so rolled her over for her face to be visible and pulled the blankets back a little.  No problems! Phew!! Leaving Hungary was no problem, as leaving most countries isn’t.  A little further down the track we were to enter Serbia and to experience seeing other people being expelled from the train and taken off by the guards only to have to return to Budapest and not attempt to return to Serbia.  Our hearts stopped at this stage.  Did we have the necessary papers, was everything in order, had checking, checking and rechecking information prior to leaving home been enough?  Fortunately yes, we had no problems at all and the ‘Passport Police’ just stamped our passports and said thankyou.  Once again Bronwyn was asleep through the entire event.  Such a  contrast to a couple of doors up the carriage.
