Feminine Boots for Fall 2009
Boots aren’t always known for being the most feminine of footwear. Jeweled sandals, strappy pumps and sexy peep-toes seem to get all the fun… But designers are out to prove that wrong, with details like flowers and ruffles showing up in Fall 2009 boots . I’ve pulled together a few of my favorite picks, but there are lots more out there! With everything from little hearts showing up on shoe laces to intricately pleated cuffs, there are lots of options for feminine fashionistas. The green suede “ French Maid ” bootie (you could also argue that it’s a mule as well…) by Nanette Lepore features a ruffle down the outside of the shoe. It also comes in charcoal suede as well

Three Wolgin Prize finalists namedTyler School of Art has named the three finalists for the very first Wolgin International Competition in the Fine Arts to be awarded October 22. They are all Americans– Sanford Biggers (NY), Michael Rakowitz (Chicago) and Ryan Trecartin (Philadelphia)! The international prize of $150,000 is huge, and the jurors this year are Melissa Chiu, director of the Asia Society; Paolo Colombo, art advisor to the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art and managing director of Dorje Film, Rome; and Ingrid Schaffner, senior curator here at the ICA. All this I got from the Philadelphia Inquirer, here

Getting an Invitation to A Small World The second most asked question I get is “can you give me an invitation to A Small World” (the first is how do you make the money to Live a Jet Set Life – that question will be answered soon with the our Jet Set Business Academy). Rob: There’s a funny video with our encounter with David Schwimmer (Ross from friends) last week in Los Angeles, at the end of this post. We have been back in Toronto for just over 72 hours now. As I stated in an earlier post this was my first trip to Venice and to the La Biennale di Venezia . I have to admit that I fell in love with Venice, and had moments where I contemplated phoning my parents and asking them to send us Pookie (our adorable little toy poodle) as I wanted to stay in this somewhat unreal environment of art, architecture, perfect weather and no cars! Pookie in Gallery Window Brayham Contemporary Art Toronto, ON Of course the reality is that we don’t speak Italian, Phil has teaching and research commitments at the University of Waterloo, I have the gallery and am in the midst of my PhD

I’m not sure how legal this fake Damien Hirst blog is, but it’s funny. Im surprised Mr Hirst hasn’t shut them down. This fake Damien Hirst work of 44 peanut M&Ms is called “The fear of becoming fat expressed in the joy of being colorful” Other works include Thoughts on eternal life by someone living a mundane life in a tiny flat, The price of being a virgin in the world dominated by people who’s virginity could never be proven, and Snow White and the seven dwarfs without the seven dwarfs actually being the seven dwarfs

Propped against the wall throughout the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in the Giardini of the 53rd La Biennale di Venezia were Andre Cadere’s Barres de bois rond . These colourful wooden bars seemed purposefully out of place. They had no apparent relationship to the work they were exhibited with, and they were scattered around throughout the exhibition pavillion placed adjacent to other artists’ work, or almost tucked away in forgotten spaces.

Born: 15 April 1452 Birthplace: Vinci, Italy Died: 2 May 1519 (natural causes) Best Known As: Painter of the Mona Lisa Leonardo da Vinci is best remembered as the painter of the Mona Lisa (1503-1506) and The Last Supper (1495). But he’s almost equally famous for his astonishing multiplicity of talents: he dabbled in architecture, sculpture, engineering, geology, hydraulics and the military arts, all with success, and in his spare time doodled parachutes and flying machines that resembled inventions of the 19th and 20th centuries. He made detailed drawings of human anatomy which are still highly regarded today.

Wow! We sold a lot of furniture yesterday and this “Senior Citizen who has worked since I was a teenager ” ….was really tired last night! By the way, I’ve already been talking to the Lord [most of my life in fact], about my departure from here to the home He has prepared for me and know He has all of that worked out. I just don’t like the idea of a number of government czars who don’t know me deciding if I am valuable enough to society for such and such treatment. In the midst of government grabbing for my liberties and accusing me of being a part of an organized mob when I stand up for my American freedom, I am reminded this is “Thankful Thursday” and I am truly thankful for our All Wise, All Knowing, All Powerful Heavenly Father: “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body, you are called to peace. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15

As I try to write about Naomi Cleary , so that I can introduce you to her, so that you want to read the interview that follows, I am holding one of her pots in my hand. I am holding it in my hand and I am turning it around horizontal and flipping it vertical, I am running my fingers over it’s smooth surface, I am trying to explain to you why I like it so much. The Naomi Cleary I have uses a bunch of yellows and blues and greens, there is some grey, the patterning is definitely floral in nature.

An artist recently sent me a link to her exhibit listing on the venue’s website, but there was no location mentioned anywhere on the page! Details about the exhibit were sketchy, and the artist was too close to the event to see that important information was missing. Don’t rely on your venues to get the publicity right. Take charge! Whether it’s your responsibility or the venue’s, every event listing and invitation should consider the 5 Ws and 1 H of P.R.: Who?

In an attempt to define his own reputation William Blake mounted an exhibition of his own work in 1809, above his brother’s shop in Soho. It was not a success. Installation of William Blake's 1809 Exhibition; Sam Drake/Tate Photography Few people saw the sixteen watercolors and tempera paintings in the exhibition and the single review was scathing. Robert Hunt, writing in the Sept. 17, 1809 Examiner , wrote: … when the ebullations of a distempered brain are mistaken for the sallies of genius by those whose works have exhibited the soundest thinking in art, the malady [madness] has indeed attained a pernicious height, and it becomes a duty to endeavor to arrest its progress. Such is the case with the productions and admirers of WILLIAM BLAKE, an unfortunate lunatic, whose personal inoffensiveness secures him from confinement, and consequently, of whom no public notice would have been taken, if he was not … held up to public admiration by many esteemed amateurs and professors as a genius in some respect original and legitimate

“If love be courtesy refined, And you be civil in profusion, That you will to my hopes prove kind, Is but a natural conclusion.” – Antonio’s Song, Don Quixote pt I, chapter XI Joe Boruchow, Be Courteous! Joe Boruchow occasionally sends out images from his cut paper series of posters related to political topics in the air. The artist, who is as passionate about art and music as he is about the world around him, focuses in this new poster on the Henry Lewis Gates/Cambridge police brouhaha.

A featured lot in the upcoming auction on September 12th will be a work by Francois Gall titled Strolling Along the Seine . Gall was born in Transylvania in 1912 and studied art in Rome at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts working menial jobs to survive until he was awarded a scholarship from the Hungarian government in 1930. Admiring the first wave of French Impressionists, Gall quickly established himself in Paris and studied under Devambez at the National Academy of Fine Arts six years later. Becoming a naturalized French citizen in 1942, the artist participated in various Salon exhibitions in Paris and became a favorite with the public.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Holetown, Barbados So in a slight change from the relaxing tedium that is the summer vacation, I went on a catamaran cruise up the west coast with my boyfriend’s family. The catamarans are those wideish open-air boat looking things that the rich and famous like to jet around on, but here they do chartered cruises on them regularly, doing a tour thing up and down the west coast. Of course, as we leave the house it is POURING with rain.
