House warming and Brighton trip

music and dancing zone The bargain hunters Saturday was a successful housewarming with music and dancing and very tasty salad. Sunday was also a successful trip for bargain hunting in the Brighton area, we did manage to stumble on a random car boot sale in a big field, it had many great things on sale including cheeseburgers and ice cream. I learnt a lot from my fellow travellers about bargain hunting, first you should find some cool luggage…

Portland ~ Home to America’s Largest Antiques & Collectibles Show

The Facts… 1500 Booths 700 Dealers from more than 15 States 240,000 sq’ of space It just simply does not get any better than this if you like antique or vintage anything.  This is the place to be and the list of items is endless ~ definitely something for everyone and no junk.  This is my third time attending this show with my friend in Oregon and the anticipation has been mounting for weeks.  Three large buildings plus outdoor space takes half a day to walk around without a lot of time for stopping.  Held every March, July and October, it is well worth the five + hours to get here.  While there are price points for every budget, I spend thousands in my mind on all of the gorgeous items that catch my eye. If you read my previous post “Thrill of the Hunt” on displaying collectibles, you know what I will be seeking.  (Three pieces from my collection are from this show.) It’s that ‘Thursday Thing’…

Why is it so easy to convince yourself that if there is something you really want to do then it’s far too much of an indulgence, that you  ought to do the vacuuming first.  And then the ironing, and the dusting, DUSTING? and cleaning the fridge…  I think it’s a woman thing. Thats why it became very important to reclaim one day a week to feed the inner artist.  To get out of the house and do something, see something, meet new people, to get fresh eyes and stir up a bit of creativity.  This week’s Thursday expedition was to Blickling Hall , a wonderful Jacobean house in Norfolk owned by the National Trust.  The artistic input was going to be a textile exhibition but actually it rather paled into insignificance alongside memories of the St Lawrence Textile Centre.    However, there was a fantastic photo opportunity, the house itself, and we promised ourselves another visit to explore its interior.

Our latest addition

A couple weeks ago I was laying on the couch, feeling miserable and sick, Doug had taken the kids out for the day and I get a phone call.  It’s Doug, he’s at the thrift store down the street from our house and he has found an old kitchen hutch, with no back or shelves and needing some TLC but it was a great price and he thought we could restore it and try to sell it (and maybe make a little bit of money – imagine that).  I didn’t feel like thinking about it so I just said “sure” bring it home and we’ll figure it out. So he loads this thing in the truck and brings it home.  I finally drag my bum off the couch and peak out the window to see what we have gotten ourselves into……. it’s huge!  Holy smokes – this thing looks like it’s been sitting in someone’s barn for the last 30 years!  This is going to require some work.  But as I get closer and I see the adorable (and original) green glass knobs, the wavy glass in the top cabinets ( I love old glass and mirrors – the wavy look of the glass or the darker look of the mirror – it just screams vintage) and the three dowels on the side for towels – I quickly fall in love!  Fabulous eye Doug!  But it just looks so big there is no way we could keep it.  Our house is, well let’s say quaint, and we already have a lot of antiques we have restored and they all have their “spot” and I don’t want the house to feel crowded.  We rope our neighbor into helping us bring it into the backyard to store it until we can start cleaning it up and restoring it.  So there it sits, and there I sit in the sun porch eyeing it.  I think it was on Tuesday morning when I finally went out there and started measuring it up, then I went inside and started measuring the wall in the kitchen that it would look GREAT on.  According to my measurements it would fit perfectly, except there is already a beautiful antique buffet on that wall.  Hmmm, so I start measuring up different spots to start moving pieces of furniture.  Well, after about 30 minutes of measuring and checking and re-measuring I decide – that’s it we are keeping it and moving furniture around so it can fit in the kitchen.

SnowFoxCreations posted a photo: This house, which is now the Athens College president’s house, was built before the Civil War and was involved in the Underground Railroad. Hidden rooms connected to external exits are embedded in the basement’s walls, and the outside well has embedded “ladder” footholds leading down to the water level, where an almost invisible (to the surface) tunnel leads to an escape hole far away, at the river Continued here: 3-15-07_athenscollegepreshouse_126

Made a b-line home – Preston, Washington, United States

Jump to the full entry & travel map Preston, Washington, United States left idaho and drove through northeastern Oregon to Pendleton where I did some shopping and drove up to Richland, WA where we were able to meet up with Jason’s sister, Laura and her boyfriend Matt for a tour of their house and to have lunch.  We had a nice visit and a good lunch and drove on. Heading north along the east side of the Yakima river was a nice alternative and in no time we were on our very familiar I-90…

A party with Me…

While carrying out my daily browsing of The Clothes Horse , I came across a post she featured on a fellow blogger’s dream party. It was a fantastic concept and I couldn’t resist borrowing the idea, so now that I’ve received her blessing, here is my dream party: What type of party is it? It’s Alice in Wonderland themed: a party that embraces the weird, the wonderful and the downright strange… Who’s invited

Roman roads in Croatia

Another post on Roman heritage in Croatia! This weekend, running away from the crowds, I took my family and headed straight to my private refuge – Bukovica. One of the most unique landscapes in Croatia! A mixture of picturesque patches of green meadows and rugged, rocky planes… It is here that we have discovered, on our numerous walks, a lovely stretch of genuine Roman road! Clear view of the border stones…
