I had the pleasure of checking out the Buriki: Japanese Tin Toys from the Golden Age of American Automobile exhibit at the Japan Society this past weekend. The exhibit was a celebration of Japan’s achievements in tin toy design in the first two decades following World War II. The detail and construction of these is amazing.

Peter Reyner Banham (1922 – 1988) was a prolific architectural critic and writer best known for his 1960 theoretical treatise “Theory and Design in the First Machine Age” and his 1971 book “Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies” in which he categorized the Angelean experience into four ecological models (Surfurbia, Foothills, The Plains of Id, and Autopia) and explored the distinct architectural cultures of each ecology. He was based in London, but lived primarily in the United States from the mid 1970s to the end of his life

Totally cheating
Very old books with cracking spines, thoroughly yellowed pages, and portraits of men with handlebar mustaches are, naturally, fascinating reads. And few more so than The World’s Brightest Gems of Music , an un-copyrighted (at least as far as I could tell) text promoted by editor Professor D. H. Morrison as a volume of: “ songs, hymns, glees, madrigals, ballads, sentences, responses, anthems, chants, etc., etc., all chosen expressly for the eminent fitness to promote The Happiness of Every Home” Thank you Thompson and Thomas of 262 Wabash Avenue, Chicago.

Leonardo da Vinci
Julie and I have spent the last couple of weekends at auctions, standing out in the boiling sun so you don’t have to! We have some fabulous finds! My favorite is and antique bedroom set with a Gentlemen’s dresser. It is beautiful and has already found a new home. It seems that Julie likes the old cupboard with the wainscoting on the inside. We had a tremendous amount of traffic the last few days. We decided to be open when Lands’ End has their huge warehouse blow-out sale. Harris Park, where they have their sale, is located only about a quarter of a mile from the barn. So it has been lots of fun for us. People from all over our Great States have made it an annual event to come to the Lands’ End Sale. We will be open tomorrow, too.

Before I leave Thankful Thursday , I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how thankful I am for friends that last a lifetime. Yesterday my dear, long-time friend Mollie and her lovely granddaughter, Jaida, stopped by the market on their way to the coast to see Mollie’s son, Kevin, and his family. It could be months or years between visits, but a friendship that is tried and true always resumes like you were only hours apart. What laughter and tears we have shared with a friendship that spans almost a half-century if not a full half-century. Yes, I am especially thankful for lasting friendships. “A friend loves at all times.” Proverbs 17:17

Wow! We sold a lot of furniture yesterday and this “Senior Citizen who has worked since I was a teenager ” ….was really tired last night! By the way, I’ve already been talking to the Lord [most of my life in fact], about my departure from here to the home He has prepared for me and know He has all of that worked out. I just don’t like the idea of a number of government czars who don’t know me deciding if I am valuable enough to society for such and such treatment. In the midst of government grabbing for my liberties and accusing me of being a part of an organized mob when I stand up for my American freedom, I am reminded this is “Thankful Thursday” and I am truly thankful for our All Wise, All Knowing, All Powerful Heavenly Father: “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body, you are called to peace. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15

This trip to Syria isn’t just about the charming locals, I’m also interested in the former inhabitants of this lovely place : the Assyrians and the Romans – fascinating folk, both of them. Picking up some ancient goodies would also be nice, there’s nothing like an artefact or two in the drawing room to impress one’s friends…not that I have a drawing room as I live out of a rucksack, silly me! I’m starting with Damascus, and of course, I’ll be staying in the Old City, which is right in the middle of town. I know in a few weeks I’ll be staying in a bedouin tent and milking goats – probably smelling and looking like one…SO I’m pleased to be staying at the Beit Al Mamlouka – a very cool 17th century “palace” in Old Damascus which is now a boutique hotel. At $150 + for four-star digs and five-star character, it’s very reasonable

A featured lot in the upcoming auction on September 12th will be a work by Francois Gall titled Strolling Along the Seine . Gall was born in Transylvania in 1912 and studied art in Rome at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts working menial jobs to survive until he was awarded a scholarship from the Hungarian government in 1930. Admiring the first wave of French Impressionists, Gall quickly established himself in Paris and studied under Devambez at the National Academy of Fine Arts six years later. Becoming a naturalized French citizen in 1942, the artist participated in various Salon exhibitions in Paris and became a favorite with the public.

Studies in French Impressionism
It all started one day when I was walking home from work. I noticed that a basement level apartment had really interesting wrought iron window bars: I love the shape and pattern of the wrought-iron bars, and even more that it made something that was so practical interesting looking and sort of beautiful. I guess that’s why I enjoy old architecture and antiques so much. While they can often be ostentatious and tacky, they go to great lengths to make practical things look decorative and pleasing to the eye. After I noticed that window, I noticed some other windows around the neighborhood that had such decoration as well. Here’s some other favorites: I used to have a bedroom in a basement and while I don’t miss it at all, maybe I would have enjoyed it a little bit more if I had these pretty shapes in which to view feet through.

Midweek is a good time for many to stop and attend a weekly prayer meeting at their local church. Our church serves an excellent meal at a reasonable price and has a number of activities including Bible study and prayer meetings. But if you’re like us and simply can’t get off in time to attend an organized meeting, you may want to spend a little extra personal private time with the Lord evaluating the week. It’s a great boost to get us over the hump of mid-week. Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. Golden yellow…
I don’t like to proclaim I live life in the fast lane but as we approached 100 miles per hour it was brought into question. But I’m not in the car yet. I’m on the upper deck of a third story apartment building I’ve never been in down the street from my place, we’re listening to a wandering gypsy cover Paul Simon ["Sometimes life's like a G chord," he tells me with a grin and passes me the Evan Williams.] I’m sitting alone in the Whiteheart drinking Evan Williams waiting for my friends to finish smoking and mustering up the courage to shout to the single lady a seat away from me [she was with somebody else too.] I’m walking down the breakdown lane of I-95 just outside of Gray calculating if I could make it to Portland by daybreak, or at least noon [and maybe I still could have.] That was certainly not the fast lane
