Hard at Work

Welcome to the World of Vintage Posters! In the coming months, we’ll  do our best to share with you some of the things we find interesting.  Right now, we are located in a little cave of an office in a nondescript building in Oakland.  Here, we take pictures, update our website, and plan and pack for our shows.  This will change in 2010, as we move to a new space where we can continue to catalogue and photograph our ever changing collection of original vintage posters, but will also be available to meet with poster collectors, students of graphic design and anyone curious about ephemera. What does a self-described team of poster geeks do all day?

glass marbles and glass jars

When we are lucky enough to have sunshine in these winter months, it shouldn’t be wasted. And snowy sunshine seems to be abundant at the moment. The snowy sunlight makes pretty things so much easier to see and I couldn’t resist our dish of marbles! We’ve had some marbles in a dish in the bedroom for ages that used to be mine as a kid but late this summer, we went to one of the last car boot sales of the year and bought a few more.

sterling finds: hallmarks and the makings of real silverware

Through flea markets and auctions my parents have been slowly amassing a collection of French and British sterling cutlery that spans the 19th century (the oldest dates to about 1802). From their remarkable size and weight, these utensils seem regal–and may well have been

The Animals are a talking…

Taking down Christmas, as small as it was, means Valentine’s is on it’s way~ along with Graham’s 18th birthday~ Therefore, I decided to add a little “pink” to my mantle display this time. I switched out Angel Girl ( Judy Moore made and found at the CountryPeller show) for “Miss Sternsey Bear Rabbit”, from Missouri and once featured on a Halllmark calander… To avoid any rumors of favortism amongest the dolls, “Miss Dolly” is not even being considered for a post today or to even be photographed ! Seems she has just gotten a little too much attention lately ! So, sitting alongside “Proud Mr. Horse” (Folk Art Museum, Ny City circa 1995) and “Miss Giraffe” (Judy Moore,San Antonio, Tx

Carnival Glass Goes with Misson Furniture

After you start collecting craftsman furniture you recognize that you'll need other decorative items to round out your interior. For me, personally, I use old glassware. I really like Fenton art glass from the 1920s and 30s Carnival glass is produced by a process known as doping, hence this glass is also sometimes referred to as “dope glass”

"Re-gifting" Antiques: A Clever Way to Stay out of the Red.

This article was originally published in the Mid Island Midweek as “ A clever way to master the art of re-gifting. “ This time of year we are bombarded more than usual with commercials and ads enticing us to buy, buy buy. Seems that if you don’t buy something for someone then you are incomplete

Eye of the Beholder [New Zealand Vintage]

A few weeks ago I had the privileged and blessing of going to New Zealand before returning to the States. Visiting New Zealand was a dream come true and I can’t even describe how beautiful it was!!! I finally had some time to look through the pics and I will be sharing my adventure soon, but until then…here are some of the items found at an Antique Shop/Art Studio. It really was the most RANDOM place! I honestly wonder if it really exists or if I was hallucinating or if God placed it there for me to experience

Traditional meets Mid Century Brilliantly

Trad Fusion – Traditional Home Magazine I saw the picture of this room in Traditional Home Magazine last year and it still impresses me.  Interior Designer Mary Anne Smiley pulled this fantastic home together for a young newly married couple in Dallas.  The Perry’s home is Classic Architecture with truly a brilliant mix of Mid-Century Modern furniture.  William Switzer sofas, Kelly Werstler carpet and Barcelona chairs ~ Brilliant! Grand Entrance – All photos by Colleen Duffley Young and Fresh, yet still Sophisticated and Timeless.  Somehow a perfect balance has been achieved.

Folk Art by Peter Ompir

PETER OMPIR TIN TRAY SIGNED   In the 1950s the Horn of Plenty Gift Shop in Sturbridge featured the work of Massachusetts’ resident artist Peter Ompir. Now, fifty years later, Ompir’s highly-collectible, distinctive, freehand painted items are still displayed in the antique shop located at that same site. Considered one of America’s premier folk artists, Peter Ompir has been christened many names—the “Dean of American Toleware,” the “Dean of Décor Painting” and the “Father of American Decorative Painting.” In an article written by Phillip C.

Christie’s

[edit] History In A Peep at Christies’ (1796), James Gillray caricatured actress Elizabeth Farren and huntsman Lord Derby examining paintings appropriate to their tastes and heights. The official company literature states that founder James Christie conducted the first sale in London, England on 5 December 1766, [1] and the earliest auction catalogue the company retains is from December 1766. However, other sources note that James Christie rented auction rooms from 1762, and newspaper advertisements of Christie’s sales dating from 1759 have also been traced.[citation needed] Christie’s soon established a reputation as a leading auction house, and took advantage of London’s new found status as the major centre of the international art trade after the French Revolution. Christie’s was a public company, listed on the London Stock Exchange from 1973 to 1999, after which it was taken into private ownership by Frenchman François Pinault.

If you won’t take it from me, listen to Deloitte

Hurrah for Ian Stewart, chief economist at Deloitte, who has perfectly articulated what I’ve been trying to tell readers of this blog for months. His message is unequivocal: buy antiques now! Admittedly his August statement to clients referred specifically to antique furniture, but I believe the same basic principals could equally be applied to antique and some modern (but not contemporary!) prints, and indeed to many other areas of the antiques market. I will let Mr.

1 PicADay Project: Day 3

Ok – drove through a little town on my back way home from work and decided to stop at the little Antique Store “Nolensville Feed Mill” and take some pictures.  Of course, being a new photographer, I still don’t know the eqttiqute so I thought it best to go inside and ask the owner if I could take some photos of his stuff because I was practicing and it looked interesting.  He promptly and kindly thanked me for asking first.  He said that in the past he’s had people stop and take photos without asking.  He’s ok with it but with liability issues he would rather someone ask first.  I don’t blame him.   He was really nice  to me and if you’re ever in the Nolensville area, please stop in and say hi.  I took a lot of pictures and finally decided on the one below.  Of course as always I will post some of the other ones I took on my website http://www.janscapturedmemories.com .  You can click on the folder called “Old Stuff in Nolensville.”  This one I simply call “Old Stuff in Nolensville.”  Too tired to be creative with the name.
