Scotland Day 2

DAY TWO            Today we went to another town outside of Perth, about 30 minutes away where there is a large warhouse called “The Scottish Antique & Arts Centre” and basically it’s just that. A bunch of people who have collected and sell anitiques send their antiques to this warehouse where several clerks host and sell it for them. It really was brilliant and some of the antiques were over hundreds of years old, that was mostly the oreintal antiques, but there were many other interesting things too such as ivory silverware, real fur coats (which I didn’t enjoy), and even old postcards, some of which had been used and had messages and addresses on the back of them

Take it easy as the Trading Place

Sit back, relax and take it all in.  While the hustle and bustle of shoppers, locals, buggies and cars seem to be a never ending stream, simply take time to relax.  Begin by strolling around the Quilt Garden and the sidewalks connecting Menno-Hof to the Farmstead Inn and the Antique Gallery.  Enjoy the sights and sounds of Shipshewana at your own pace.   Take in the sweet smell of the flowers that comprise the Quilt Garden and watch as the ducks leisurely swim in the ponds. For more information on the Quilt Garden Tour and where each of the gardens are located visit www.amishcountry.org/quiltgardens .

A Minton Peacock.

Minton made twelve of these peacocks in the 1870’s and only nine are known to survive. This example has been roosting in the Walker gallery in Liverpool since 1891. (One of the other survivors is very lucky still to be here, as it survived the shipwreck of the Loch Ard on its way to an exhibition in Sydney.

Your Stuff Has Issues—Condition Issues Part One

Lots of people like acquiring collectibles and antiques, as evidenced by the popularity of the Antiques Roadshow on PBS . Yet, when you own something that is older than you, how do you take care of it?  After all, you wouldn’t put a piece of Limoges porcelain from the 1890′s in the dishwasher or use adhesive tape to repair a tear on a U.S.

Manci’s Antique Club – Daphne, Alabama

Manci’s Antique Club is essentially a bar and restaurant, not an antique store. Let’s get that straight right away. It had me confused for a short while, until my friend Chris Kalifeh dragged me in for a quick look around.

Construction Complete!

Throughout the last few months we’ve had a little bit of construction going on around here.  We have removed a few pig pens from the front of the Livestock Barn, remodeled the inside and are transferring the main offices into that area and connecting it with the Livestock offices.  We feel this will simplify auction days for everyone and eliminating confusion for the public on any given day.  The question, “Which office do I go to?” will soon be solved.  We are excited about this move and are looking forward to better serving our customers.

Going, Going, Gone!

The Auction Barn Today, after taking some time to thank our military for their service to our country, it was time to go to our favorite auction location and get some great finds for the store. We found all kinds of goodies you will see soon in our store and on this site. We found a darling new four-poster bed, a darling little girls wicker chair, a scary doll to go with it (EEK!), a fabulous washstand that will house a new collection of goodies coming later this summer, and a super cool antique organ roll! Wait until you see that one! So, as Memorial Day comes to an end I am thankful I have the freedom to spend my day salvaging old furniture and deciding what I want to put in MY store, vs.

It went from a nice warm-sunny 20degrees (Celsius) to -2 overnight and I was met with SNOW in the morning (which is apparently very rare this time of year) The wind started to pick up and I started to worry.

Annapolis Scavenger Hunt

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you already know I try to walk downtown to the Annapolis City Dock everyday, so yes I do know where the lovely victorian piece of glass pictured above is located, however if you check out the 24 other photos on the web posted by the Annapolis Historic Commission you may be stumped in a few instances. You only have to be able to identify 20 of the 25 to be entered into a drawing for a $75 gift certificate at a downtown store

Scanning for Gold at Book Sales…

I love the month of May…it is easily my favourite!  The weather is more summerlike, trees and flowers begin blossoming, and it’s time to plant the garden.  It’s also book sale season – I love scouting for our store! Tomorrow night, Jim and I will travel to Moncton for the Canadian Federation of University Women’s 48th Annual Book Fair (the Fredericton Chapter will hold theirs on May 28th and 29th).  Friday morning, Dad and I (and the kids – they’re off school on Friday), will be in line for the annual Saint John Free Public Library Book Sale.  Hope will be shopping for herself, but Anna will be helping us find the good stuff! I haven’t been to the Moncton sale since I’ve had the bookstore, so I’m not sure what to expect…I’m hoping for great things!  The sale is held in a Curling Club in the neighbourhood I used to live in before moving to Saint John (we’ll be stopping to visit old friends for tea after we buy books!). Venue for the Moncton sale…
