Thoughts On The Past

I had a bunch of blog-able topics tumbling about in my head over the last few days, but I haven’t been able to steal the moments it would take  to sketch them out. I’ve found that I really shouldn’t attempt to write when I don’t have a clear objective or a spark of driving inspiration, yet here I am, trying to squeeze a modicum of interest out of the so recently potential-filled portion of my now-exhausted brain. No telling what may result.

Piazza Navona

Each town needs a Piazza at least a village green that exudes life with poets, dancing and music children studying mimes feeding pigeons on the walks restaurants with outdoor tables, Italian wines happy faces dozens of roses being offered to beautiful ladies. Fountains flowing waters people strolling, accordions and guitars, violins a few shops with marvelous but unduly expensive antiques that whisk the mind to ages long ago. Lovers strolling arm in arm waiters with white shirts red napkins draped over their arms the word “grazie” echoing down small alleys.

heaven knows, anything goes.

I had my overnight with the “famous” guy last night.  In his case, famous means: well known in his circles, and maybe you’ve seen him once or twice in a magazine or on TV.  In the interests of keeping his identity anonymous, there are some things I would like to say in this entry that I’m going to have to leave out.  He’s an esteemed (according to one description of him that google brought up) antique collector/dealer, or at least enough so that if I mentioned certain pieces/collections he had, someone in the antique world might figure out who he is.  I realize my blog isn’t really at the level yet that he would have to worry, but who knows, maybe it will take off overnight and I’ll suddenly be outing my johns.  I’ll save that for my multi-million dollar, Heidi Fleiss book deal.  Until then, he’ll just be known as “antique man.” We talked a lot on the phone beforehand.  He was very talkative (on the phone and in person), which I liked.  After setting up our meeting and then confirming a couple times via text and phone, I arrived around 8pm.  He met me at the door with a beautiful bulldog, who seemed very friendly.  He was probably in his 50s (the man, not the dog), but wasn’t terribly out of shape or bad looking.  Just looked his age.  He led me into his apartment, which was beautiful, although a little cluttered, which seems to be the antique collector’s way.  His fireplace was going, which was very nice.  I later learned that the building used to be owned by a famous couple…  who I shouldn’t mention.  I truly wish I could be more specific, but just know, the apartment and the things he had in it were simply beautiful. We made small talk as he grabbed a bottle of Prosecco and poured us both a glass.  He told me that I looked different from my pictures, which I’ve been told before.  I need to go through all my picture options with my roommate sometime.  Although nobody has been disappointed (they say I’m better in person) I don’t want to misrepresent myself.  He said I looked a little more…  mature?  I also am a little scruffier than my pics make me out to be. As he came back from the kitchen he grabbed me and went for the mouth.  We made out for a minute, then headed over to the sofa where we lounged, chatted, listened to some music, and fended off his dog, who was pretty nippy.  I think he was jealous of the attention that I was getting that was usually his.  We listened to a lot of music…  jazz mostly.  We had talked on the phone about some hard to find CDs he had gotten that he was excited to play for me

1930s Inner Mongolia puppet empire of Japan MILITARY MEDAL

For the next few posts I’d like to show a few items from Inner Mongolia. As you may know, Japan spread her influence through Manchuria and up into Mongolia in the 1930s and 1940s. There seems to have been a number of Japanese-led puppet governments in Inner Mongolia, but I am not exactly sure how many, the names of each, and how long each lasted.

My pretties…

Finally snapped some photos of my space at Homestead.  The re-do was a long time coming.  Right now there’s only one layaway piece still in my space.  And I really need to purchase more smalls to fill it completely, but it’s on the road to recovery … Ironically, this piece isn’t in the shop yet!  But…it is a perfect example of irony.  I keep lots of white stuff in the shop, so I thought it only fitting to bring in a brown thing that says “White.”  It’s a White sewing machine cover.  The rubber band’s around it because I had to do some repair work.  It’s in shabby condition, but it’s one of those things I’m drawn to for reasons even I don’t understand.  Bought this baby in Warrenton…LAST spring.  That’s how long I’ve been sitting on it.  Time for it to go to the shop.  Bye-bye, my pretty. This is, perhaps, my favorite corner of my universe.  I could just sit and stare at it.  I want to move in.  If I had a bed or even a comfy chaise, I might never leave.

Sunday in January – Thanks for the Inspiration!

To all of my favorite bloggers mentioned here in my new blog: You are all tremendously talented, insightful, creative and energetic people who have inspired me to pursue the life I have always imagined and for one reason (or excuse) have never been able to “GO FOR IT!” For the inspiration and beauty you all create…Thank You!!!  What inspirations!!! Follow me on my journey… Exploring my dreams…my loves, my aspirations!  Zinc, in minute amounts, is essential for life; Industrially, zinc is mainly used in the galvanization of steel. Decoratively it adds a grounding presence to any room or arrangement. I love that it is cool to the touch but adds warmth at the same time! A little touch of this metal adds a big impact to any vignette or room setting

Museum of Antique Glass in Zadar, Croatia – www.secretdalmatia.com

One of the finest museums in Croatia is definitely The Museum of Antique Glass in Zadar. The museum opened it’s doors this past spring after years of restoration of the beautiful classical Cosmacendi palace (1877) located on the former defense wall of Zadar called “muraj”. The architect Silađin did a terrific job with the interiors but the outside addition – huge modern glass block – is more than unsuccessful

To Klaus!

Apparently the 600-year-old skull of German pirate Klaus Stoertebeker was stolen from a Hamburg museum last week. The skull had a spike driven through it after ole Klausy boy and an unknown number of his followers were beheaded. Their heads were then nailed on display at the entrance of the Hamburg harbor as a deterrent to future would-be pirates.

Organization practical and pretty

stas Two weeks ago I styled and produced a photo shoot for a Better Homes & Gardens publication called “Storage.” I am not an obsessively organized person when it comes to my own home, but I was so impressed with the homeowner (who is launching her own company as a professional organizer), and her ideas that I thought I would use the inspiration to do a bit of organizing on my own. While the plastic containers I purchased at Target do nothing for me aesthetically, they are quite practical in keeping those little bits contained. I now have one for ribbon bits, one for I-Pod bits, one for picture hooks, votive candles, small boxes, tags, you get the picture

The Windsor Chair

I am infinitely in love with Windsor Benches & Chairs.  I love the combination in the pictures below of traditional spindle chairs along side the more dramatic higher backed Windsor chairs.  The bench is what really captures me though.  I would love to ( some day )  have a combination of the dramatic higher backed chairs, traditional spindle chairs and one beautiful Windsor bench, preferably painted in a lovely, punchy color.  Milky Blue perhaps? Ahh a girl can dream!

Hard at Work

Welcome to the World of Vintage Posters! In the coming months, we’ll  do our best to share with you some of the things we find interesting.  Right now, we are located in a little cave of an office in a nondescript building in Oakland.  Here, we take pictures, update our website, and plan and pack for our shows.  This will change in 2010, as we move to a new space where we can continue to catalogue and photograph our ever changing collection of original vintage posters, but will also be available to meet with poster collectors, students of graphic design and anyone curious about ephemera. What does a self-described team of poster geeks do all day?

glass marbles and glass jars

When we are lucky enough to have sunshine in these winter months, it shouldn’t be wasted. And snowy sunshine seems to be abundant at the moment. The snowy sunlight makes pretty things so much easier to see and I couldn’t resist our dish of marbles! We’ve had some marbles in a dish in the bedroom for ages that used to be mine as a kid but late this summer, we went to one of the last car boot sales of the year and bought a few more.
